BANG FOR THE BITE
apple

If 10,000 Biters opt for a 1-ounce bottle of organic face oil instead of the conventional stuff, we'll avert enough synthetic baddies (such as formaldehyde) to fill the tanks of 52 cars.

COCKTAIL FACT

Last quarter, Exxon Mobil posted the highest profits of any corporation in U.S. history - $11.68 billion.

Has your mug become a "magnate" for fine lines?

The Bite

For the price of a few gallons of Texas tea, you can start to lose some of those crevices. Organic face oils play down imperfections no matter which side of the offshore drilling issue you're on.

The Benefits

  • Striking rich antioxidants. Our picks contain plant-based antioxidants, which encourage skin cell renewal.
  • Slick skin. Pipe these oils onto your face to help with dryness, lines, and redness.
  • Less toxic oil spills. The fewer synthetic chems (think formaldehyde and parabens) we put into our beauty products, the fewer that will end up in nature - and in us (skin absorbs about 60% of what you rub on it).

Personally Speaking

Heather splurged on some Le Sanctuaire face oil and it worked like a dream - even fixing Burning Man dryness.

Olive New York

The worst thing about winter in NYC? The dry, cold air. It was brutal on my skin - I looked like I had a permanent cold for four months, red and flaky all around my nose.

So I did what any NYer would do, I went to what my friend touted as "the best dermatologist ever." The guy handed me a bunch o' creams and I was all clear - for about a minute. Back in his office, I met with his partner - a woman around my age who casually said to me: "These creams are fine as long as you're not trying to get pregnant." Uh, I wasn't, but what? (A steroid was a key ingred in at least one.)

I darted outta there and started my search for something natural - and that's when I saw her, a woman at Le Pain Quotidien, all glowy and clown-nose-free. I asked her what she used, she said olive oil. I later dabbed a little on my face, and that's when the clouds parted. It totally worked. (And unlike the creams, I didn't have to go back for more so soon).

Biter Comments...
I recommend organic coconut oil...straight up, or used in making easy lotions at home.
Did it make you break out?
Wow - before I apply my coconut oil, I spritz my face each morning and night with TwinLabs NAACP. My 95 year old mother's face glows - and hardly any wrinkles. I've been using it for years and always get compliments on my skin.
One of my good friends swears that olive oil is the best sunscreen ever.I found it works as well as conventional sunscreen and has no gross additives.
I wonder about the breakouts too, isn't oil going to clog up and cause acne? Is it just for dryness or does it help with blemishes too... very interested :)
I use organic safflower oil after reading an article about the properties in that particular oil (can't remember what they are) help skin so much. My wrinkles decreased easily by 50% within weeks. It was an amazing difference. The breakouts are usually from too dry skin, not too oily. The oil cleared up my skin nicely. Organic coconut and olive oil dried mine out further. Safflower does it for me.
I'm interested in the "break out factor" as well. I use oil-free moisturizing lotion on my skin because I tend to break out if I use lotions with oil in them. Or is it the other ingredients??? Anyone had experience with this? Thanks!
I discovered dry brushing (body only) and organic coconut oil this summer. All I can say is, "WOW!" It really works. Skin soft like buttah. Elta Creme Moisturizer is also good, but main ingredient is petrolatum.
it's the other ingredients. oil doesn't make skin break out. i started using regular cooking oil (safflower/sunflower) because my skin is sensitive and breaks into rashes from some of the additives in lotions. it worked and cost a whole lot less. olive oil, shea butter, coconut oil, nut oils are all great. Jason makes a good vitamin E oil with almond oil and other stuff that's perfect for dabbing around eyes and costs a good deal less than most creams.
the trick to using olive oil (or safflower, etc) is not using too much. i rarely if ever wash my face which prevents it from drying out. but if it's cold and windy out or if i've spent too much time in a hot shower, just a tiny bit of olive oil on my fingertips is enough for my whole face. i break out less than i did when using soap and moisturizers. to smell pretty, too, add a few drops of sandalwood or lavender oil to the bottle of olive oil.
I've been using olive oil on my skin and hair for years. It really works. I have dry wavy (fuzzy) hair, dry skin, and eczema. The olive oil works great! Just a little dab at a time. When I put it on my face I just use a little dot and rub it in my hands first, then lightly dab my hands on my face. I've never broken out from olive oil, but I have from manufactured face lotions. I save money buying the extra virgin olive oil (for cooking) from the grocery store.
i have been using olive oil, almond oil & vitamin e oil on my skin for a few years. and recently instead of spending lot's of money on facial scrubs, i have been using baking soda & water and let me tell ya, my face has never been softer.
Yup, olive oil is great. The best, tho' is to rub the oil that you generate yourself (!), and seems to accumulate by the sides of your nose in the morning, across your cheeks. It is rarified stuff (I am sure it would be hideously expensive in a bottle) and often doesn't even go that far but... So back to the pantry for olive, coconut, etc. A pore clogging substance is known as "comedogenic" So google that, or "non-comedogenic" to find which oils, etc, will not clog pores.
I use jojoba oil as my daily moisturizer. One fat drop does my whole face, though occasionally my flaky nose needs an extra tiny drop of its own. When I used to use regular moisturizers, i felt like I was covering my face with an extra layer. Oil sinks right in and softens!
i second jojoba oil! i became frustrated with expensive organic products and the woman in the health/beauty section of my grocery turned me on to organic jojoba. my skin is very mixed... oily in some areas, dry in others and this works amazing! after i wash my face i dab a few drops on my fingers and rub in. i let it set in for a few minutes then dab off any excess. highly recommend it!
When I heard olive oil is really great, I tried it and it works for me. I've been using it for quite a long time. teak furniture
