Wanna play with fire?

01.18.2007

The Bite:
Go for it - just make sure the wax in your candles is veggie-based. The oil byproducts in most candles can't hold a flame to options like soy, since they burn longer and take less of a toll on the planet.
The Benefits:
  • Petroleum-free. Conventional paraffin wax is created during the oil refining process. Soy's renewable, petrol's not.
  • Less smoke. If they're veggie-based, they'll leave fewer smoke marks on your walls and ceilings.
  • Nice, slow burn. Soy candles burn up to 50% longer than paraffin wax ones do.
  • Affordable options are now available. (Which rules, since we don't exactly have money to, er, burn.)
Personally Speaking:
Living proof that most guys aren't big on candles, the only ones Toshio owns are a few Lumia votives, strategically placed on top of his toilet tank next to a pack of matches.
Wanna Try:
When using soy, go for non-genetically modified where possible.
  • Lumia Organic Votive - the orange ginger is sweet enough for even Toshio's bathroom ($3).
  • Aveda Shampure Soy Wax Candle - the smell of Sara's fave shampoo is now available in candle form ($28).
  • Archipelago Botanicals - Heather's current fave is currant-scented. Made from soy and delivered in a cute keepsake box ($25).
  • Dropwise - try their Soothe aromatherapy travel tin to help you sleep - just remember to blow it out before nodding off ($20).
  • Pharmacopia Organic Soy Candles - the citrus version is loaded with neroli, which is rumored to be an aphrodisiac... ($22).
  • Way Out Wax - all hand-crafted from soy in Vermont. Try the Clear Head scent for when you're feeling sleepy or stuffy and the travel tins when you're on the go ($4-$8).
  • Timothy Han - for UK Biters, at £28 these top-of-the-line candles are a total splurge item. GMO-free, organic and unbleached.

Cocktail Fact
