What's more profitable than selling soda?

03.26.2008

The Bite:
Not much. Soft drink markups are so high that if we didn't loathe disposable containers so much, we'd probably have a go at creating the next Fanta. 'Til then, we'll make our own soda, sans cans or bottles, thankyouverymuch.
The Benefits:
  • Liquid-asset raising. A glass of DIY soda can cost just a couple dimes after the initial investment, versus, say, a $1.29 medium Coke at a fast food restaurant.
  • Less container waste. Making soda at home saves transport energy, plus it takes a lotta energy to mine aluminum for cans and produce plastic for bottles (even recycled ones).
  • It's fast and easy. Even faster and easier than making coffee.
  • It can be healthier, since you get to decide what goes into the bevvies (maybe skip the corn syrup in favor of an alternative sweetener).
Personally Speaking:
Even nonsoda-drinkers on the team liked the sparkling water with lemon we whipped up using the Soda-Club gizmo.
Wanna Try:

Cocktail Fact

Each year, Americans drink more carbonated soft drinks than juice, sports drinks, coffee, and tea combined.

Bang For The Bite

If 10,000 Biters make their own soda at home, we'll keep 6,000,000 aluminum cans outta the waste stream each year.

When i saw your notice on my e-mail list I was excited initially, 'cause I'm a "soda junkie" ( especially gingerale)and have been trying to do away with the awful "habit". Upon reading your "bite", however, I was genuinely grossly disappointed. Your suggestions are waaay beyond my wallet. If you find anything more "reasonably priced" please post it promptly. I like your "bites" and have found many of them quite worthwhile. Thanks.
I found a page here ( http://www dot alpharubicon dot com/kids/makesoda.html ) that tells you how to make your own soda at home, without the expensive equipment. I don't know where to find soda flavorings as described here, but I imagine that it would be easy enough to make your own with flavor extracts/fruit juices. One note, though - every page I found about home-brewing root beer or soda suggests that you use plastic rather than glass bottles to store your soda, as the yeast fermenting process can be unpredictable and can cause glass bottles to explode.
