BANG FOR THE BITE
apple

Fruit leather tends to carry a bit more packaging than we'd like, but it's a superconvenient, healthy snack, and the organic label sweetens the deal.

COCKTAIL FACT

Except for the Rose Bowl and SF's Gay Pride Fest, SF's Folsom Street Fair S&M extravaganza attracts more people than any other event in CA (400,000 visitors).

Are you into S and M?

The Bite

(Snacks and munchies, that is.) If your answer is "Yes, Master," crack open a package of organic fruit leather - it's a healthy way to satisfy your sweet tooth while you're at school, on the trails, or tied up in your fave underground dungeon.

The Benefits

  • It's much healthier than masochism. A nationwide study found that 62% of Americans don't eat fruit on a daily basis; these snacks deliver a small dose of nutrients, corn syrup-free.
  • Less of an Earth-lashing. Fruit leather is more concentrated than fresh fruit, so the pesticides are more concentrated too. Stick with organic.
  • Satisfying your sweets fetish.

Personally Speaking

Heather's school lunchbox was usually full of stuff kids wouldn't wanna swap (sorry, Mom) - except for the fruit leather, which the other kids sought after like a bottom in a room full of tops.

Hi, My Name is Mike…

...and I'm a gummyholic.

I have been addicted to gummy candies of all kinds (bears, frogs, dinosaurs - everything except spiders...I hate spiders) for as long as I can remember. It is definitely my sugar rush of choice, but given my semi-recent fear of developing diabetes, I've been trying to cut down on sugar.

I've already conditioned myself to eat something sweet after like every meal (dessert included), so I've turned to fruit leather-y things as a better substitute. I get the 365 Organic Fruit Strips from Whole Foods (eating a blueberry one as we speak), and they do the trick for the most part.

But if you can suggest any other gummy substitutes, I'm all ears.

Biter Comments...
But what of all that plastic packaging? And especially in the summer (here in the northern hemisphere, anyway) with all this abounding fresh fruit that can be packed safely in a reusable lunch bag or container or padded by the extra layers I might carry with me.
A great alternative to those concerned with pacakaging is Trader Joe's "pieces." Whenever the machine forming the fruit strips cuts wrong, TJ's just packages the mis-cuts into a several ounce package. I love to wrap my fruit leather around a peanut butter filled pretzel--yum! PB & J.
Is there a recipe to make these fruit leathers? Does anyone have any ideas??? I have 3 children and this would be awesome and even more awesome if I could make them.
Sometimes when I get hungry I eat nuts because they are hard and crunchy and you don't eat as much because your teeth start to hurt or your jaw gets tired. As for the sweettooth it is a good idea to have raisins and other sweet fruits around you can also eat dates and other sweet fruits to satisfy your cravings.
You can make fruit leathers with the smooth disk insert in dehydrators. These work on air draw with low heat, so I'm not sure about ovens. Pour applesauce, or any other pureed fruit over the disk and run dehydrator. Cut into triangles and roll. It was a common lunch box snack from my dad when I was a kid.
Cook fruit until soft. Run through a sieve. Add sugar or honey to taste, if desired. Pour about 1/4 inch unto cookie sheet sprayed with Pam. Put in oven at 150 degrees for about 12 hours. Cut into strips.
Thanks Kalia, nice recipe. I will try it one of these days. Motorcycle Fairings
very interesting just as this one low profile motorcycle helmets
