The Bite:
Are you and your private eyes settling for not-so-sustainable granola? Can't go for that (no can do). Try our fave granola from eco-responsible producers - they taste way better than the usual suspects. Yes, can do.
The Benefits:
  • A real hit for your taste buds. These granolas contain delicious ingredients such as dried cranberries and cocoa (plus you can add whatever you like).
  • Less Maneater, more healthy eater. Granola's a good source of dietary fiber and its nuts and fruit contain protein and antioxidants, plus our picks are made without hydrogenated vegetable oils and have zero trans fat.
  • Not getting Out of Touch with the planet. All the companies here give back to the environment by recycling at their HQs, donating to eco-charities, and/or giving employees paid time off to volunteer.
Personally Speaking:
This was one of those tips we swore we'd never do - but though it may smack of Berks and yurts, these picks are lip-smackin'.
Wanna Try:
  • Laughing Giraffe Granola - if you're into nutty, go for this raw option; the Walnut Pecan Cherry Ginger version's tops ($9/8 ounces).
  • GrandyOats Granola - organic flavors like Mainely Maple and Chocolate Peanut Crisp, plus a great low-fat option called Berries Jubilee; also offers bulk ordering online ($5/10-13 ounces).
  • Bear Naked Grain-ola Bars - new this month from Bear Naked: chewy granola in flavors like Chocolaty Cherry ($21/12 bars).
  • Kaia Foods Buckwheat Granola - snack-y clusters of mostly raw granola goodness in Cocoa Bliss, Dates and Spices, and Raisin Cinnamon ($7/12 ounces).
  • Check the blog for our DIY recipe.

Cocktail Fact

The inventor of the granola bar, Stanley Mason, also invented the squeezable ketchup bottle, dental floss dispensers, heated pizza boxes, and the disposable diaper.

Bang For The Bite

Friends might call you "crunchy," but these granolas taste great and are great for the planet.

Any eco-granola recommendations for those who are allergic to nuts? I have always looked for a healthy alternative but haven't found one yet.
Fantastic organic granola!! My favorites are Banana Bliss & Naughty But Nice. These guys put heart and soul into their granola and it shows. They also have an amazing assortment of organic seeds, nuts, and granola bars! Check them out at pureblissorganics.com. This statement is completely unsolicited; I discovered them at my local farmers market, and believe they deserve a little recognition.
I highly recommend Galaxy granola. It is baked in Applesauce, no oil and is also low in sugar. I love the not so sweet vanilla, its great! Thanks for the other recommendations too, I love Ideal Bite!
This was a great Ideal Bite tip! I love granola! If anyone from MA, or New England is looking for a great, organic, LOCAL granola I found The Best Damn Granola at the Hingham Farmers' Market. They are a great little company with a lot of promise and their granolas are great too! You can order online or find them in a few stores www.thebestdamngranola.com They ship anywhere in the US.
oh my gosh, PLEASE try Early Bird granola! it is my absolute favorite. salty-sweet, mostly organic and uses olive oil instead of butter. check them out, http://www.earlybirdfoods.com
And how long do you think "Private Eye" will be singing through my head? LOL. Thanks for the tip.
So where is the DIY recipe?
How could you miss listing Cafe Fanny Organic Granola? Alice Waters was the pioneer of local, sustainable food and it's still made in small batches at their headquarters/kitchen in Berkeley. It's available in Whole Foods and other places around the country. A decadently delicious treat and dairy-free to boot!
Hey, what about making your own granola with organic ingredients purchased in bulk from the co-op? It's not that hard, honest, and it's much cheaper. Here's a basic recipe:

In a saucepan, combine 3/4 cup organic sugar, 1 Tbsp. organic molasses, 1/3 cup vegetable oil, and 1/3 cup honey. Heat until sugar dissolves. In a large cake bowl, combine 5 cups organic rolled oats, 1/2 cup dry milk powder (leave this out to make it vegan), 3/4 tsp. cinnamon, and a pinch of salt. If you like, you can also add coconut, wheat germ, or nuts of any kind. Pour the sugar syrup over the dry ingredients, stir to mix, and spread in a large cake pan (or two pans, if you don't have one that's big enough). Bake at 375 for 10 minutes. After removing from the oven, you can add raisins (organic, of course) or other dried fruit. Allow granola to cool in pans, stirring every 10 minutes or so to prevent sticking, then store in an airtight container. Voila, breakfast.
I have a new cookbook about to be released in mid July, No Wheat, No Dairy, No Problem and it has a granola recipe using Agave Nectar! Come check out my blog and mark your calendar for mid July.
