BANG FOR THE BITE
apple

Eco-fab shoes'll keep both your inner fashionista and environmentalist well satisfied, but your inner money manager is another matter...

COCKTAIL FACT

In an '89 Nike commercial shot in Kenya, a tribesman hired to say "Just Do It" in his native tongue was instead shown saying, "I don't want these. Give me big shoes."

Birkenstocks not really your thing?

The Bite

Hey there's nothing wrong with shoes that look like they were just plucked from a 60s acid trip, but we're ecstatic to have sassier eco-options for the office and hitting the town.

The Benefits

  • He-e-e-y, good lookin'.
  • Support designers who dare to be fashionable and planet-friendly at the same time, innovating with alternative and recycled materials.
  • Great leather-free options are now available for all you veg-heads out there.

Personally Speaking

All the Biter Team women (doesn't have the same ring as "Biter Chicks," does it?) are coveting the Charmoné pumps. Jen even has a picture of them in her phone (you think we lie).

Wanna Try?

  • Charmoné Rosemary Pumps - faux suede from a fab company that donates 5% of profits to eco-organizations ($295).
  • Terra Plana Men's Jack and Women's Liu - cute'n'sporty styles made using locally sourced and recycled materials ($125-$160).
  • Green Toe Men's Loaf and Women's GT Jane - hippie-chic casuals so comfy you could wear 'em to bed, incorporating natural materials like jute ($85).
  • Veja - Euro Biters can check out their hot, high-end vegan sneakers available only in-stores (prices vary).
  • Planet Shoes, TheVegetarianSite, Vegetarian Shoes and Zappos offer many cruelty-free versions of classic shoe styles. Note: some contain PVC and other non-green materials.

The Golden Globes Make Me a Nasty Consumer, but Oh, I Do Want the Shoes

So I'm watching the Golden Globes as I type this, and I hate to admit it, but I want all those clothes. I'm sorry, I do. I'm going to eco-hell, I know, but I do. I'm a nasty consumerist nightmare heathen, but I do. I want it want it want it.  I do.

Um, if I give up milk for a month, can I feel better about buying new shoes? Pretty please?

-Heather... off to root for a bunch of movies I haven't yet seen...

Biter Comments...
One new Spanish brand is worth a mention. El Naturalista has a variety of funky shoes inspired by nature/travel and they use environmentally friendly dyes in the making. The leather is tanned using vegetable extracts and tree bark and the result is super soft. Some shoes have 100% natural rubber insoles made with recycled rubber, others have cork insoles made from recycled cork. The footbeds are made with recycled polyurethane. Eco-friendly, comfortable and unique designs - highly recommended.
I don't know - Angelia Jolie has money and tons of those high-fashion clothes and she was a raving b**** last night on the red carpet. I couldn't believe it, she barely cracked a smile and when people asked her questions on-air she just glared at them until Brad had to step in and answer all the questions. Jeez, lighten up, lady! She actually looked happier when she was with Billy Bob Thornton!
Best vegan hiking boots out there are hard to find- but available sometimes on Zappos. The Garmont Vegan comes in mens and womens sizes and I love them!!! Comfortable, durable and no animal products!!!
Thought I'd throw in a plug for Mooshoes, our local vegan store - but I'm sure they have a website. They have cute, trendy shoes that are affordable. If I had tons of green (the spendable variety) I'd be buying Stella McCartney shoes by the truckload. Cruelty-free and lovely, lovely. Just spent way too much time last week looking for non-leather mid-calf boots with a walkable heel - I can do 3"ers but know I'll actually wear 2 1/2" more often. Found a pleather pair on the Amazon site - we'll see.
You can get Mooshoes online (www.mooshoes.com) or in New York City at their Lower East Side store. They've been in business for 5 years now and have tons of shoes, belts, wallets, purses, etc. All are vegan and sweatshop free--and of course fashionable and comfortable. Disclaimer: the owners are friends of mine and all-around great people to boot!
Just letting you know I'm adding the blog here at IdealBite to my blogroll to my blog nl-info.blogspot.com :)
Ditto on the shoes and clothes from the Globes. We had The Devil Wears Prada in our mailbox the next day..thanx to Netflix, and that just surged my desire for impractical clothes and shoes even more. Being a mom of 2 small boys w/ a cool little tech job that I work at from home, I truly have NO need for pumps and very little (if any) need for anything remotely high fashion. While I'm living in VA for the next 1.5 years, I hail from the mountains of CO and honed my practical shoe sense from having to trek up and down stairs while under contruction or 4 feet of snow! OR being ready to hike up a gorgeous mountain trail at lunch. But, a girl can dream can't she?!
There's been alot of discussion regarding shoes. No one has mentioned that there is a very low cost way to have chic shoes, eco and animal friendly. Go to any discount store or outlet mall and buy fabric shoes like us poor folk have been doing all our lives. DUH!!!
Payless has long been the fall back solution for those of us who prefer not to buy leather, and I agree with Lissyj that fabric shoes are the ticket for summer. But fashion forward fauxs for fall and winter are more problematic. My bigger problem at the moment is that I work in a building in NYC that houses several garmento groups including Roberto Cavalli - I find myself sharing an elevator every day with people (mostly women, mostly young!) decked out in fur! I bite my lip to keep from asking them how they can wear blood-drenched crap like that? They think they look young and hip, but they all look old and vicious in my opinion.
No eco shoes discussion is complete without mentioning Fluevog and Yellow Port. Both companies have been making eco-sensitive footwear for years. In the case of Yellow Port, they've only ever made green shoes - none of this "okay our back's up against the wall, let's pretend we give a shit about the planet" style approach that all the big fakers are pulling out these days.
For me, i juts love the shoes! All of their shoes. Theyre all so cute! I wonder where they got those and how much. Do they go to zappos? LOL!
