BANG FOR THE BITE
apple

If 10,000 Biters opt for the Go Green Tweezers instead of regular ones, Tweezerman will plant almost half the number of trees that are in NY's Central Park.

COCKTAIL FACT

Oh, really? Warning on a Conair Pro Style 1600 hair dryer: Never use while sleeping.

Are you walking down the beauty aisle?

The Bite

Say "I Do" to greener styling tools. Getting hitched to eco-friendlier beauty instruments is a piece of three-tiered cake with our list of planet-positive beauty tools.

The Benefits

  • Unveiling your prettiness. These tools work as well as or better than conventional ones we've used in the past.
  • Eloping to a less wasteful world. Buying high-quality beauty tools that last a lifetime means less waste in the end.
  • Vowing to support eco-materials. Incorporating sustainable supplies such as recycled aluminum and packaging, these aesthetic assistants help you give good face while leaving less of a trace on the earth.

Personally Speaking

The Silence HP Graphite hairdryer has changed Jenifer's life, giving her a little more peace in her noisy, downtown SF apartment. The only bummer is that it's too quiet to drown out her neighbor's early-morning smoker's hack.

Wanna Try?

  • Silence HP Graphite - superquiet hairdryer that uses about 2/3 the power of conventional versions, is made in USA, and includes a lifetime warranty ($139).
  • Paris Presents EcoTools - five-makeup brush set with bamboo handles and nonanimal bristles that don't shed like some of their more expensive, noneco counterparts ($11).
  • Boscia Rose Blotting Linens - leaf fiber removes sweat and oil from shiny faces (without messing your makeup) and blots lipstick, and 10% of your sale supports breast cancer research ($10).
  • Tweezerman Go Green Tweezer - well-aligned, travel-size tweezers that come in recycled packaging; $1 of your purchase goes to planting trees ($10).
  • 95 and Sunny Nail Files - these colored crystal glass nail files last forever, so you don't have to keep buying emery boards ($5-$10).

My High Horse Is Shorter Now

I used to be that antimakeup girl - you know the one. And I can't lie, the words "natural beauty" escaped my lips on more than a few occasions. But that was all pre-sunspots. Now that I have what I've come to resentfully refer to as my "cheetah face," I embrace with open arms the stuff that evens my skin tone. Thanks, makeup (and makeup brushes).

Still, I try to steer clear of slathering myself with more of the hormones that got me into this spotty mess to begin with. That means nothing paraben-laden touches this face, thankyouverymuch. Check out SkinDeep.com to make sure your favorites are on the safe side. Oh, and check out some of the cool things the natural-beauty believers at Aveda are doing to raise money for clean water and to keep even more plastic out of the environment (reminder: take off those bottle caps before you recycle).

Biter Comments...
I've always been an anti-makeup girl; still am. If women knew that makeup gives you wrinkles, they wouldn't pile on so much of the gunk. All it does is clog your pores and your skin can't breathe. As for those who like the "natural" look in makeup, well, what's "natural" about wearing makeup, anyway? If you're going to go for the "natural" look, don't wear makeup in the FIRST place! I've never been a makeup wearer, and I've never been a sun worshiper, which is perhaps at least part of the reason why now, in my early 50s, I'm still pretty much wrinkle free.
That's all well and good Linda, but I look like hell with no makeup. I've always kept out of the sun, but I have uneven skin tone with a lot of redness. And there are two things that will survive the apocalypse -- cockroaches and my dark circles. So unless I want to go around looking like a zombie with people asking me if I'm OK, SOME makeup is a must for me. I just try to avoid the usual suspects like parabens, waxes, etc.
I'm kind of in the middle on this subject. I don't wear make up every day, especially not at work. I'm not at work to catch a man, so why bother? Plus, I'm in the military, and honestly, I think it looks silly to wear make up with your uniform (unless you're in your A's, I wear makeup sometimes when I'm in my A's, but never with ACUs). As a matter of fact, I'd prefer not to catch a man at work, so the homelier I can look while there the better! I only wear make up on special occasions. The one product I do use every day is sunscreen. God bless sunscreen. I am very fair skinned and I'd look like a lobster all summer if I didn't use it. Also, the sun will age you just as fast as makeup will. Most of the women I know who cake on the most make up are doing it to try and cover the massive sun damage they've suffered. Stop sun tanning, and you'd save a ton of money and time on make up, geez. Not to mention the inevitable skin cancer. Also, if you're going to wear make up, its of dire importance that you remember to wash it off before you go to bed. Sleeping in make up will ruin your skin in a flash fried buffalo second.
Not to change the subject, but what is up with all the "buy gold" comments?? I have had 15 e-mails with it in them!! Something we don't know.....??
About that cocktail factoid: The hair dryer tag sounds silly, but this is a real danger. A family member died this way.
Kristy, what I'm talking about is wearing makeup just for the sake of wearing makeup, not about wearing makeup for the purpose of concealing skin flaws. Heck, I even use an under-eye concealer stick myself on occasion. :-)
Want to make the brown spots and all the other sun damage lesions disappear instead of covering them? Naturally? Non-toxiacally? Really cheap too? Start taking MSM in large quantity orally (I take 3 tbsp each day) and apply MSM gel topically. Side effects include reducing or eliminating muscle/joint aches and pains! This has been a miracle for me - takes time but it took time to get 'em. MSM is $10/pound at msm-msm.com. I would not wear shorts my legs looked so bad but after two years the skin looks normal! I wish I had before and after pics because no one would believe me. This is absolutely all true.
