BANG FOR THE BITE
apple

Let's face it, ski bunnies and buds: We gotta support greener ski resorts, or pretty soon there won't be any more slopes to ski.

COCKTAIL FACT

By the end of 2008, desert-bound Dubai, United Arab Emirates, will have two year-round, indoor ski resorts.

The Bite

No need to resort to something illegal, just head to an eco-conscious ski resort. Check our list of the best in powder-perfect, way-above-sea-level destinations.

The Benefits

  • Spending your mogul money wisely. Experts say chronic global warming could cause ski seasons to vaporize before our eyes. Lift tickets can cost a buzz-killing $85 per day, so vote with your green at greener resorts. Combined efforts by the National Ski Area Association and participating ski resorts have had the eco-effect of planting nearly 17 million trees.
  • Eco-perks at sustainable resorts. Some resorts are taking eco to the next altitude, providing alternative fuel shuttles, introducing recycling programs, and educating resort-goers about climate change.
  • Fun in the snow = a totally legal high.

Personally Speaking

The first time Heather went skiing, she got so frustrated that she took off her skis, walked down the mountain, and knocked back a few hot toddies. You'll still only find her barely making her way down beginner slopes...or at the lodge bar.

Wanna Try?

  • East - Stowe (VT) built an eco-education center to increase the environmental awareness among visitors.
  • Midwest - Buck Hill (MN) uses wind-based energy, and Lutsen (MN) is working on impressive fish and wildlife habitat protection initiatives.
  • West - Ski Area Citizens' Coalition lists the top 10 most environmentally sensitive resorts in the Western United States.

Après Ski Vacation

Last week I went skiing in beautiful Lake Tahoe. And after reading a good chunk of global warming research last year, I took great joy (I mean, more than usual) in spending a week outside, surrounded by snow. It was just plain fun, totally rejuvenating.

It's great to see the National Ski Areas Association working toward making sure we can all continue shoop-shooping for years to come. Check out its Sustainable Slopes environmental charter.  Tons of major ski areas have signed on, including one of my favorite little gems, Mt. Rose.

-Jenifer Morgan...off to indulge in a little après work cocktail...

Biter Comments...
Great tip. Quick question- am I going crazy or is the link to the blog been missing from the past few tips?
Just back from Telluride - great fun, as always but COLD!! Don't forget to let reader/skiers know that they can also help the cause by skiing green. check out www.skigreen.org to carbon offset your ski trip.
Hi... I wish you had explained WHY ski resorts are unfriendly to the environment. I know I've read this somewhere before, but I can't remember the details and I don't recall what the big deal is.
No,Ann,I noticed the blog link was missing too. I think they want you to refer friends & get the blog link at the top of the page. Also is the refer friends good through Jan.31 2008?? Your page says Jan. 31 2007. Caught ya..LOL
I wouldn't think you'd want to be promoting Canadian products as long as they are still killing baby seals. I no longer buy Canadian, even my favorite blue berries.
I wasn't really aware ski resorts were bad for the environment... how are they? Erosional damage from humans on the actual mountains must be minimal.... I;m sure I'm missing some points though. Interesting read - Climate change impact on South America travel industry mentions how many glaciers are shrinking there...
