Eyebrow Threading

Hip, Hip, Hair-ray

The Bite:
Is a unibrow something to shout about? Not so much. So make some noise for threading - a practice that loops cotton strings around unwanted strands of hair, then plucks 'em out. Try threading to shape your brows - compared to waxing, it's more precise, less irritating, creates less waste, and avoids petroleum and other chemicals. A small change, but one worthy of applause.
The Benefits:
  • It's gentler, since it whisks away hair quickly and without the chemicals and fragrances contained in hot wax (so there's less chance of irritation).
  • Three cheers for no petroleum!
  • Waxing generates applicator, paper strip, and unused wax waste, and requires energy to keep liquid heated. Threading uses just a simple (and biodegradable) cotton string.
Personally Speaking:
Jenifer, who has really sensitive skin and thus can't wholeheartedly recommend any method of hair removal, nonetheless gets her brows threaded after popping a couple aspirin because it's easier on her skin than waxing.

  • Look for experienced practitioners who have completed a training program, and ask around for recommendations.

Cocktail Fact

A woman spends nearly 60 days of her total lifetime removing body hair.

Bang For The Bite

Threading's harder to find than waxing, but new practitioners are popping up everywhere.

Threading is widely used in India. However, since it removes each strand of hair it is more painful than waxing. With waxing, with just one pull, the hair strands are removed. But with threading each strand of hair is removed individually. So considering the pain factor, waxing is a better option. I lived in the US and used to wax my eyebrows. Now that I have moved to India, and all the salons only have threading as an option, I have stopped shaping my eyebrows.
In some states, this practice falls within the definition of "cosmetology" and may require a license, so make sure your practitioner is practicing legally.
why go to a salon when you can do it yourself...: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iVmbHB2p4WM n.b.: this is not me, i just looked for a tutorial online... i learned how to do it from an iraqi friend.
How about the old fashioned no cost way to maintain clean eyebrows...tweezers? No cost once you buy a pair of drugstore tweezers (pointy ones work better than a slanted tip). My tweezers must be at least twenty to thirty years old.
I've done threading four times before and I LOVE it. I hadn't waxed in years and had been plucking with a tweezers, but wanted to go back to a salon to reshape my brows. I do not think threading is very painful, it stings a little bit, but is also a fast process. and i love that it creates very little waste.
Like Carol I use tweezers for a few hairs but for most I use an epilator. It's shaped like an electric razor but has lots of tiny tweezers plucking away. It's scary to use at first and better if done regularly (so there aren't as many hairs to pluck at once). Hand held manual tweezers would take forever as I use it for legs, underarms and even on my face (I'm a senior--hate that fine mustache...but don't need it for eyebrows anymore). Yes it uses electricity but it's quick.
I have never had the threading technique done on my eyebrows although I'd like to try it. I have seen it done at many mall kiosks, and agree with Ruth's post above. I HIGHLY recommend you go to a professional to have this done. The "technicians" at the malls use their own saliva to moisten the thread and that is not sanitary, not to mention rather disgusting.
The first time really hurts. But after that it gets easier and easier and my stylist doesn't have any moustache hair anymore because she has been threading for so long. Also, waxing stretches and pulls your skin which adds to wrinkles later. Threading doesn't pull the tissue at all. It's good for eyebrows, moustache and all facial hair. I recommend you find a good technician as I had one that would go too close to my lips and catch the tissue.
Interesting you should bring up "Threading" today as just a couple of days ago I asked my wife if she knew what it was and she didn't know either. Now we both know. Thanks.
thanks for posting this tip. i just wanted to add that although i only thread my brows and lip, i find it less painful than waxing and definitely faster and less expensive. not too mention it is the greenest hair removal technique. if you are in la, you can try wow beauty salon on washington blvd. you can walk on in without an appt and usually there is very little if any wait. the ladies there are lovely and i promise you will thank me!
