BANG FOR THE BITE

If you print 'em on recycled paper, there's virtually no downside to keeping this info on-hand (except, of course, that your wallet might end up a little bulky).

COCKTAIL FACT

Not-so-haute pockets: Before the 1800s, fashion with pockets was considered low-class - it signaled that you didn't have a servant to carry your stuff for you.

Wanna make your shopping choices easier than defrosting a meat 'n' cheese turnover?

The Bite

Here's a tip you can prepare in minutes: Just print out and keep eco-pocket guides in your wallet (or, in some cases, text on your phone) to solve conundrums such as which plastics you can easily recycle and which fish you can safely eat. We're still waiting on the guide to the gnarliest microwavable meals.

The Benefits

  • Not zapping the earth. Keep important eco-info, such as which fruit and veggies pack the fewest pesticides, handy.
  • It's healthier than a pizza pocket. Certain pocket guides help you avoid mercury and other nastiness.

Personally Speaking

Jen's loaded - at least according to the size of her wallet, which is stuffed full of pocket guides (except for our Top Five Synthetic Chems to Avoid, which she memorized long ago).

Wanna Try?

No Room at the Wallet Inn

So if you prefer wallets that’ll fit in your pocket, and yours is already busting at the seams with quarters for laundry and receipts (who, me?), you may not have the space to squeeze in today’s handy-dandy guides. If you also have a cell phone that’s with you 24-7 (alas), just take a few minutes to type the lists you need into your cell phone’s "notes" field, and save. Bonus: You’ll look very busy and important at the grocery store and restaurants when you go to check whether you should choose peach cobbler or a banana split.

Good luck inputting the fun words, like polyethylene terephthalate! (You only have to do it once.)

Biter Comments...
Good information, but do you have to promote fat-hatred to sensationalize your point? I found this offensive - it undermined the larger important point you were trying to make. You can promote good choices (for everyone) without reinforcing body hatred. I'd suggest you educate yourself on the Health at Every Size movement.
One more handy guide: http://www.foe.org/nano_sunscreens_guide/Sunscreen%20Guide%203.pdf This is a wallet card on safe sunscreens! Companies are using nanoparticles in sunscreens to make sun-blocking ingredients like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide rub on clear instead of white. These nanoparticles – which can potentially wreak havoc on your body when absorbed through the skin – are being added without labeling and reliable safety information.
As one of the first to complain about Friday's tip on (not) wasting water, I thought it only fair to say, 'Well done' about today's tip. Excellent, valuable and easy to use.
The Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch program is a FANTASTIC source of info about which fish are the safest to eat. You can go to their site on your cell and look up different species while you're out to dinner. The printable guide is regional. http://www.mbayaq.org/cr/SeafoodWatch.asp
Hi, I love these handy dandy guides but I can't get the BPA guide to open. Is there a way I can get a cut and paste version?
How about catching the water condesation from your air conditioning unit (we leave in Texas and when it is 105, it is a necessity)? We capture 1-2 gallons daily to water our plants, better than turning on the hose!
Suggestion for microwave meals, since it was half mentioned in the tip, I've noticed that Amy's Organics (looove their soups and such) have started to make microwave meals. They seem to usually live next to the Lean Cuisine and Healthy Choice ones.
Meg - you can access an image of the BPA-free guide at http://zrecs.blogspot.com/2008/03/bpa-wallet-card.html
Wow what a drag! if you don't put the security word in right and have to go back it wipes out your comment!
Hi there Toshio, thanks for the info but I'm still trying to access the BPA-free guide. the link you gave me takes me to the same place where I am supposed to figure out how to "find the software to download the image" or something like that. I am wayyyyy to tech challanged to be able to do that. Is there any place that I can hit and it will just pop up?
It's not a wallet, but I LOVE the teeny, tiny tote that fits in your pocket and opens into a huge bag...it goes everywhere with me! Check it out at ReusableBags.com - the Acme Workhorse. They're having a huge summer sale and I just love the site
