Think you're gonna have to stop eating altogether to undo the damage from St. Paddy's?

The Bite

Unless you're still peeing green beer from Saturday's festivities on Monday, it just ain't so. For most of us, detox options that won't cause total resistance in the stomach area should suffice.

The Benefits

  • Body rehab. Natural ingredients like milk thistle have been used by homeopathic doctors for detoxing for centuries.
  • Fewer stomachaches. You don't have to consume only liquids while gazing longingly at your mate's veggie burger.
  • Vegan formulas. Many detox (and other) capsules contain animal-based gelatin. Not these.

Personally Speaking

We keep a couple boxes of the Traditional Medicinals tea in the office kitchen; with what some of us on the team consume, our livers can use all the help they can get.

Wanna Try?

Despite the fact that some of us wear scrubs to bed and love us some Grey's Anatomy, we aren't doctors, so check with yours before you make any drastic changes in your day-to-day regime.

I’m Not into Detoxes

I'm OK with diets. I was vegan for 8 mos, but I didn't make a big deal about it. On the other hand, when chicks in the Bite offices do their spring detoxes or whatever, the rest of us brace for a week of moodiness and comments about "how good a Twix or a cheeseburger sounds right now, but no, I can't, I'm on a detox." The detoxers outnumber the nondetoxers 2-to-1 at Ideal Bite, BTW.

If you're really serious about getting healthy, why not listen to Matthew "My Goal is to Break a Sweat Each Day" McConaughey and exercise more? I believe in consistent change - not just the once-in-a-while detox that spares your liver for a week, only to make it start processing vodka heavily as soon as the detox is over.

-Toshio...off to thank Hanah for knowing everything about Matthew McConaughey and inspiring this blog...

Biter Comments...
I have tried many detox products and diets, some are so extreme. I know it is good to detox so over the years I have tried so many. Some make you feel like you are going to die! recently I found a liquid Zeolite and I have been taking it ever since. This allows me and my family to detox with out side effects. We are hooked, just like the heavy metals in our body get hooked to the Liquid Zeolite and leave our body! www.liquidzeolite.org www.detoxpackage.com for more info
Arbonne International also has a great year round detox tea and with arbonne never tested on animals or has no animal products. Love those clean livers and good for your body products made by folks that love the planet and all that lives on it! ;) Namaste' Steph

I've never done a detox in my life, ever. I don't feel compelled to. Sure, I overindulge from time to time on liquor and fatty foods, but when that happens, I always feel 100% better after lots of water (especially mineral water), some exercise and a lot of fresh veggies. Sets me right every time.
For those more worried about their kidneys than their liver add Hydrangea to your routine, I have a kidney disorder and couldn't have alcohol or even tylonol for years til my naturepath turned me on to it. I'm sure he's thrilled I'm quite the lush now.:)
We don't just get toxins in what we eat and drink, we come in contact with hundreds just by living in today's environment, in the air we breathe, the water (especially plastic bottled), and on fresh veggies if they're not organic. A lot of these toxins stay in the body for years. Toxic build up causes cancer and other diseases. It just depends on how well one's body can live with them. (See family tree.) Everyone could use a good detox once a year!
Ha! Matthew will be breaking more sweat than he's ever known pretty soon...(soon to be Dad). Anyway, I know what you mean about the 'detox wining', but on the other hand I cheer them on because what's really true is I should be doing it too! I do like the detox teas from time to time and I also agree, when I feel like I'm lagging, I crank up the veggies and it set's me right too (physically and mentally). Enjoy your blog! I can say that up until today's post I have been very pleased with your site. Instead of trying to promote a "synthetic urine" to pass a drug screen why do you promote not using drugs. As an employer you suggesting using this as an alternative to being a responsible adult I find amazing. Stick to what you are good at, eco-living, not promoting beating a system that is there for a reason. Drug users in the workplace are extremely expensive to deal with. You blew it today.
better yet, Leslie, how about promoting not drinking, which is a hell-of-a-lot more expensive to employers than recreational drug users, unless you're talking about the prescription drug users (who seem to be everywhere if you believe the chatter on the idiot box). I found the tip an excellent one, but come on, Toshio, "I WAS vegan for 8 months"???? that's barely enough time for any of your organs to miss animal by product!
"Detoxing" is nothing but a load of hooey. It's such a crock! The only ones who need to "detox" are alkies and druggies, for the rest of us, for those who can afford to, anyway, ODing on veggies sounds good to me, but as for special teas and other internal cleansers, FUHGEDDABOUDIT! That's nothing but malarkey! They're just moeny-making gimmicks for the companies who make 'em.
Well I guess most people do not understand the huge amount of toxins we have from daily life, before we eat or drink. Why is it we wait until we are so ill to take notice? no one is saying we should not drink or do other things that are known to be 'bad' for our bodies. The kind of things we should be worried about, as far as toxins in our body, are the thing we do not know about. Things that will surface in time! but not in time for some, sad I think. www.detoxpackage.com Caz
My husband and I did the Master Cleanse in early February 2008. For us it was we had positive results. My husband detox was tougher than mine... We both had tremendous amount of energy throughout and after the detox.. Bad habits of too much coffee or too much alcohol ceased on their own. OUr sleeping schedules seemed to go back like when we were kids. Body was ready for bed at 9:30 and we were up without an alarm by 5:30 - 6 and with energy.. The Master Cleanse is definately not for everyone. I would research, try to talk to others and listen to their feedback. We plan on doing this at least once a year..
I have done the dettox. It makes me feel better but I feel like I put on wt. when I do it. Is this normal?
I agree with you, Linda - I think it's hooey, too. The human body is an amazing machine and is really quite efficient at removing wastes through the liver, kidneys, sweat, urine, etc. We already have lots of mechanisms built in for this purpose. I've never done a "detox" and I'm quite healthy. If you're ill, change your lifestyle and/or see a doctor. Show me some real scientific evidence that our bodies suffer from a buildup of toxins and then we'll talk. I've yet to find any. It concerns me too that even the biggest proponents of detoxing (as well as the medical community) can't actually identify any specific toxins we might be harboring. Are so many people really so gullible? All that said, I doubt in most cases that a detox would be harmful (except maybe to your wallet), so if it makes you feel better, go for it.
Never tried detoxing before... but I noticed the mention of Traditional Medicinals Teas... I actually drink the "Organic Mother's Milk" blend to increase my breastmilk supply. I must say that I was initially skeptical about the whole "herbal blend" schtick, but it actually works(in combination with the other things I'm doing).
Not thrilled with the "No time for a detox before the big drug test? A bottle of QuickFix Synthetic Urine will set you back only about $30". Even if it is just a joke, it encourages (or at least allows) for the use of illegal drugs and ways to cover them up.
Synthetic Urine is no joke and neither is beating drug tests.
