BANG FOR THE BITE
apple

Contrary to Heather's belief, you won't save the planet drinking organic wine. Still, you can feel good knowing that added chems and hormones aren't in your glass or on your plate.

COCKTAIL FACT

The most expensive bottle of wine was sold for $160K in 1985. 11 months later, the cork slipped into the bottle and ruined it.

The Bite

Go with one word: organic. Summon your wine-swilling, cheese-loving pals, uncork a few bottles, set out the cheese tray and kick back… it could be a long evening. With all the organic wine and cheese options available these days, you'll make Dionysus green with envy. And note: organic wine does not last as long uncorked, so "darn!" Finish the bottle!

The Benefits

  • Fewer 'cides. Organic wine made with organic grapes means zero chemical insecticides, herbicides and fungicides. And organic cheese is also free of hormones and antibiotics.
  • Organic farms often employ eco-friendly agricultural methods, using cover crops and natural fertilizers and promoting plant biodiversity.
  • Your palate will thank you. Minimally processed and produced in smaller quantities, this type of vino changes up your regular wine routine.
  • As Biters can attest, zero added sulfites (used as a preservative in regular wine) means gentler hangovers.

Personally Speaking

Wanna know what we think about wine & cheese? Well, we love love LOVE it. But for more details, check out our past tips, where we babble 'bout our love of everything fermented: Unwined with Biodynamic Wine and In Vino (Should Be) Veritas, and about everything stinky: "Say (Organic) Cheese!"

Wanna Try?

During our last company retreat, we did some taste testing. Here are some of the Ideal Bite team's faves:

Wine & Cheese = My Main Food Group

...Add in some tomatoes and olives and nice bread, and I swear I would need nothing more to be culinarily content.

I do have to say though... when trying some of the organic wines, and even using the air-sucker-outter-re-corker, the organic wine doesn't keep well.

Has anybiter found one that does?

Off to detox.. this testing of wines and cheeses was intense... speaking of detoxing... we should be doing a tip on that soon, which will be based on the detox I do before I try out going VEGAN. I am reading this great book called "Skinny Bitch" that has been my motivation for wanting to try it.  I liked the authors immediately when I read that they recommended organic red wine, and absolutely railed against the factory farm industry.

Biter Comments...
Check out Yorkville Cellars (also from Mendocino, but in a slightly different location than Frey). They have some fabulous wines! I don't know if they last longer though...I've never managed to have anything left in the bottle! :-)
Apologies, forgot to include the URL - they're at: http://www.yorkville-cellars.com
Hey, good timing with this tip. I'm having a "Wine and Wiffle Ball Showdown" this weekend, and was trying to think of a good wine to try out.
Strauss Family Creamery, in California, make wonderful organic cheeses from organic milk. Plus, they are a true family dairy and are delightful people with integrity. LATE JULY is a company that makes delicious and organic crackers. Their saltine is the best I have had. Think I need crackers and cheese! Enjoy! http://www.latejuly.com/ http://www.strausmilk.com/
alright folks. the very best organic red wine ever is called "Our Daily Red" and flaunts a beautiful alteration of the hands of the sistene chapel (passing a wine glass) on the label. It's like $7 a pop at Wild Oats or Whole Foods. Please recognize that if you read this, you are destined to try a bottle.
