BANG FOR THE BITE

Juice do it: choose organic juice companies who're making delicious versions of your fave fruity concoctions.

COCKTAIL FACT

About half of children's foods containing pictures / names of fruit on the packaging actually contain no fruit at all.

Wanna hear something extra juicy?

The Bite

If you're expecting something about Britney's latest choice in haircuts and tats, we can't help ya, but we do have the inside squeeze on organic juices.

The Benefits

  • Titillating tastes.
  • Easy on the pesticides. Go organic - better growing without the chems.
  • Drink your recommended daily fruit. Studies show that consuming more fruit could lower stroke risk by 31%.

Personally Speaking

The best organic juice, period, is the stuff Jen makes with organic fruit from her farmer's market and her juicer. Her fave is apple, carrot and ginger.  When the juicer's not around, Santa Cruz fits the bill.

Wanna Try?

  • Santa Cruz Organics - many flavors including lemonade with a "bite": lemon ginger echinacea ($4-$6).
  • RW Knudsen - available almost everywhere in all the classic fruit varieties ($4-$5).
  • Lakewood - also widely available, in more flavors than any other brand ($4-$5).
  • Odwalla - widely available in stores, with a new pomegranate-based line ($4).
  • Sambazon - açai is one of our new fave fruits. Try the mango blend ($4).
  • Columbia Gorge Organics - try their ciders, made using WA-grown apples ($3-$4).
  • Purity Organic - Heather's current fave, especially the Citrus Passion ($3-$4).
  • Naked Food-Juice - their açai options are organic ($3).

Sippin’ on Gin and Juice
Growing up, we started our mornings on concentrated orange juice, reconstituted within an inch of its life. While it wasn't always terribly fresh and tasty, it did the job, stretching itself for my family.

These days, I'm just not a huge juice lover. But every so often, enjoying a lovely "flash-pasturized" or fresh-squeezed juice drink in some single serve bottle, I wonder: what is best for the planet? Is it the same thing that is best for ME? Should I go for the organic, single-serve bottle, or throw my lot in with the multi-person, reconstituted cardboard version?

Hmmm. Sounds like a good tip topic.

-Heather... off to rework the editorial calendar...

Biter Comments...
Related to the tip...Jen have you tried "carrot-apple-parsley with a little kick of ginger" fresh from the juicer? I just got my first juicer last month and this flavor is almost a daily staple!
I am also an avid juicer, some of my favorite combinations are apple-ginger-lemon, and for a cold or flu, carrot-apple-ginger-garlic-cayenne. While bottled juices can be convenient, they do not have the enzymes and full vitamin potential of fresh unpasteurized juice. Also, if you are buying bottled, pay attention to the brands, as with everything. Odwalla is now owned by CocaCola, and RWKnutsen and Santa Cruz Organic are both owned by JM Smucker, so if you purchase these products you are supporting giant corporations and the watering down of organic standards.
The same top ten or 20 fruits that you should eat organic are the same ones you should drink organic. Just watch your serving size or dilute with water. Fruit is still better for you than juicing, because with the fruit you get all the fiber, juicing, you just get the calories (and some nutrients). Do check the juice bottles, even "organic" can contain Corn Syrup (or the "granola" equivalent, Rice Syrup).
I enjoyed your last article on juice. There are so many to choose from, but have you heard of Goji Juice? It has some incrediable polysaccharides, they help and serve as directors and carriers of instructions that cells use to communicate with each other. I have been taking the only standarized version of himalayan goji that is only sold by Freelife. I feel amazing now that alot of my cells in my body are working more efficiently. Write me if you need or want more information.www.thewellnessgroup.freelife.com
Jeez, I really wish people would stop using the posting section to sell things... this forum is for sharing opinions - not sales pitches.
I agree with you, other JB. (*gasp* agreement? HERE? I may faint)
Catherine - Wow, when people AGREE with you, it gives you a "fuzzy" feeling... It always turns my stomach when I start reading a post about how GREAT something is, thinking it's a sincere opinion of fellow reader, and then it launches into "I happen to be an independent salesperson, and here is my contact info..." You know what, if I wanted to sit through an infomercial, I'd stay home and watch Ron Popeil demonstrate his knife set.
What??? Odwalla A.K.A. Coca Cola is not organic, and is cooked to DEATH!! since when does fresh squeezed have a four to six week shelf life? Look at the date on a bottle that just went up on the shelf. If you really want the most nutrition for the money and not just empty calories, fresh squeezed is still the best. That wouldn't be Odwalla.
If I wanted to watch animal cruelty, I would have gone to KFC. Since I doubt you'd be watching the comments section for the zoo anymore after your "heart-felt" apology, I thought I'd go here. Your argument for posting the zoo tip in unbelievably weak. You'd support cruel zoos, but not publicly available animal sanctuaries? Watching animals in cages barely big enough to even hold HALF their recommended area? I honestly thought you'd be higher then this. What's next, you're going to post a tip saying to go to the circus? I really wouldn't hold it above you anymore.
Can anyone recommend a good juicer?
I highly recommend the Omega 3000. In fact, if you want to find out more, contact me at......just kidding. I don't sell 'em. I did a lot of research though. There is concern that centrifugal juicer spin at such high speeds that they may damage the enzymes in the fresh juice. Many spin at thousands of rpm's. The Omega 300 spins at around 80 rpm's and is a "masticating" juicer. My local health food store sell's at the MSRP of $275, but I found mine online for only $199 plus free shipping. It's super easy to use and clean, and I get great juice every time. The pulp is VERY dry, so I know it's get every last bit of juice it can. Just my opinion! ;-)
I was surprised to see Odwalla in the Organic Juice suggestions. Odwalla has (had?) many qualities but it was never organic. Eeek! Big mistake in the Juicy Tip today!
Depending on how much you want to spend on a juicer...I have been using a Breville JE900 for the past month or so and am absolutely delighted with it. This is my first, though so not much to compare it with but I did try to do some research on juicers before purchasing. Its pretty easy cleanup and seems pretty powerful. You can throw entire apples in there! Anyway, I found it on Amazon for $99, and got the free super savor shipping, it was deliverd the next afternoon. You can spend up to $400 if you want but this serves its purpose for now and I use it about 2 times a day.
I am wondering what Ideal Bite does about mistakes made in their "Bites"? Do you correct them? Organic juices are a topic I know well and so I could catch the Odwalla error, but do you have a system for correcting mistakes? Mistakes affect your credibility and will make me think twice about how airtight your other suggestions are...
FYI - Naked is now owned by Pepsi. While I am a fan of Naked,I will certainly keep an eye out for changes in their ingredients. On another note - Acai is the greatest beverage on earth. Acai has more antioxidents than any other known fruit or vegetable and all three Omegas - 3, 6 & 9. There are several companies specializing in Acai, but they are all really different. Sambazon, Bossa Nova, OneNaturalExperience and Bolthouse. But again, watch out for the nutritional info...if there is no fat content, there are no omegas. And watch the sugars per serving. I hate it when company's list 2 servings per 8 ounces!! It is so deceptive.
WOW! I am slightly surprised at the negativity on these comments. I mean, isn't some change better than nothing? Isn't Coke changing to Odwalla better than continuing with no healthy options. I mean, we have all been sucked into something for the sake of ease. Isn't it good that this can mean juice instead of coke or tap water (in some places?) Or totally pulverized juices in cardboard (even though I wish we could totally eliminate plastic!) Oh by the way, if I find a good product I am going to "sell" the hell out of it. Not that I have anything to sell officially. But isn't that the point of this website, to spread helpful information? (Even if you happen to be the seller, it doesn't mean it can't be a good product that we should know about) Anyway, back to the juice... I love my wedding present, Williams-Sonoma orange/lemon/lime juice squeezer. Its so fast, not electric. The perfect quickie and good for cooking too! Sorry I had to have my soapbox this am!
I love juice, but straight juice is too much sugar for me. I've been taking pomegranate juice diluted about 5 to 1 with herbal tea or water and sweetened with stevia. It's the Mexican "agua fresca" idea, but with stevia instead of sugar. Not as good for taste or nutrients as pure juice, but not bad, and you can drink as much as you like.
I have tried a dozen of acai available in the US market. The best one is O.N.E. Amazon Acai (One Natural Experience). Acai + Acerola juice! Check it out: www.onenaturalexperience.com
