BANG FOR THE BITE
apple

It doesn't cost a cent more, and if 10,000 Biters choose regular cones the next 5 times they go out for ice cream, by foregoing the spoon alone they'll keep the equivalent of 1 American's summer trash out of landfills.

COCKTAIL FACT

The largest ice cream sundae in the world was made in 1988 in Alberta,Canada, and weighed 54,914 lbs.

Got brain freeze every time the ice cream man asks "Cone or cup?"

The Bite

Let us help. Here’s the scoop: one less paper cup or plastic spoon isn’t going to save the world, but it’s one of those little things that add up - choose a cone, and enjoy the sweet taste of no waste.

The Benefits

  • Lap it up. “Away from home” US ice cream sales topped $12.5 billion in 2002. Help keep single-use spoons out of the waste stream with one of these two simple words: “waffle” or “sugar.”
  • Americans throw away some 25 billion (yes, with a “B”) polystyrene cups a year. Keep styrofoam out of landfills - the cone you eat your mocha chip from today won’t still be sitting in a landfill in 500 years.
  • More fun! Come on, how many foods come in edible containers?

Personally Speaking

If she manages to get to Italy this year, Heather plans to eat her weight in gelato - cones only, grazie. Jen was afraid of the ice cream man as a child and still shudders whenever she hears “Pop Goes the Weasel.”

Wanna Try?

  • Ben & Jerry’s - their ice cream is produced on family farms without the use of rbGH, a synthetic growth hormone linked to cancer in some studies.
  • Stocking up your home freezer? Try some of our faves: Whole Foods’ 365 Cookies & Cream ice cream, Stonyfield Farms Organic Javalanche nonfat frozen yogurt, or Double Rainbow butter pecan soy cream.

Sometimes I Think My Gelato Love will Save the World

So sometimes Jen comes up with tip ideas that make me roll my eyes, assuming that there is just something I don’t “get” that other light greenies out there do (who’dda thunk “Pet Portraits” would be such a popular thing???).

Sometimes we get submitatips that seem equally unlikely to make a great tip, but somehow go over amazingly well (I'll never forget the infamous “Shower Bucket” tip).

And every so often, I am on the other side of that equation – finding tip ideas that make other people roll their eyes (the “Get Gum with Less Packaging” tip is a prime example).

Today’s tip fits in that category – a tip I think RULES that makes the rest of the staff look at me with concerned gazes, wondering if I had a little too much wine the night before.

For me, though, today’s tip is one I love – one of those things you will never think about until you are standing in line to order that ice cream, and then you get a "double scoop" – a great ice cream treat and the feeling that you just made a choice that was better for the world (although not for your thighs).

The other great thing about cones?  If it’s good and hot outside (I recommend gelato in Florence, if you want to test this), and the ice cream starts dripping down your arm, it’s a fun parlor trick to see if you can lick your own elbow.

-Heather... off to dream of coconut gelato in a sugar cone...

Biter Comments...
While a fun tip, personally pretty useless because I have a wheat allergy. I cannot have a cone. (In fact, I have to be careful that the scoop has not been in contact with wheat-containing foods, including other ice creams)
Hey gang - we just got this request via email from Lucy - any of you have any insight into where she could bulk order little wooden spoons? -H ********************************** This isn’t really a tip, but I think maybe you can help me. I had never given it much thought, but during the summer, when I have different varieties of honey to sell, I always provide customers (at farmer’s markets, etc) a chance to taste them! I’ve been using small plastic tasting spoons. Do you know where I can find wooden spoons? When I was a kid a loooooooooong time ago, we used to have ice cream in individual Dixie cups and they were served with flat wooden spoons. I think that would be great to use for honey-tasting. Do you possibly know of a source to buy them wholesale? Maybe Popsicle sticks would do…Hmmm. Thanks for any help, if you can’t help, I’ll continue my quest on google…. I really like today's tip! because I think about that too when I get ice cream. A lot of times people get it in a cup to save calories, but if I want to do that I just don't eat the cone. It might "waste" the cone, but a cone will break down a lot faster than a styrofoam cup and overall I think it's the best option.
I appreciate the "Ideal Bite" that you send each day, and can even appreciate most of the reasoning behind today's "cones over cups" advice ... BUT I have nasty allergies to wheat and almost every other food except ice cream ... *&^%$#!!!!!!!!!! -> Does anybody make gluten-free ice cream cones? And, if so, where are they available? Thanks, PvH
Just a thank you to everyone who wrote to me with suggestions for the wooden spoons! I took your advice and found a great deal on 1,000 popsicle sticks on Ebay! Aaah, good old ebay...never ceases to amaze me. What's more is that now that i have navigated this website and biterblog, i do believe i have found a super source for really good information and ideas, timely tips --- from real, good people, too! Thanks again everyone! Lucy www.ohiohoney.com
Everyone with wheat allergies: you don’t have to feel left out of the ice cream frenzy. We don’t yet know of any gluten-free cones, but an ice cream maker that offers some wheat-free options that I've taste-tested and loved is Turtle Mountain -- check out their handy allergen table at: http://www.turtlemountain.com/health/allergies.html#table Their Soy Delicious Chocolate Velvet is AMAZING. And per their namesake, they help fund sea turtle habitat restoration. As always, we'd love to hear about your non-wheat or non-dairy favorites. Also, check out what Biter Carol Iwaasa from Canada says about saving on plastic spoons: "My roommate and I take our own cups and spoons when we go to get frozen yogurt. The ladies at the shop don't bat an eye. Plus I have been to 7-11 with my Nalgene and filled it with slurpee and they only charged me for a small because I brought in my own cup."
I can also attest to the deliciousness of Soy Delicious Ice Cream... now if only the ice cream man would carry it. ;)
Alot of places give discounts on drinks if you bring your own cup. Border's coffee shop offers 10% if you bring your own, they even sell them there and you get your first drink free when you buy one. I have had great luck encouraging my local coffee shop (which I prefer to support over the Big C's anyday) to offer thier own line of travel mugs, and discounts when you bring your own. It cuts down on so much waste. Also, I frequently bring a small tupperware container with me when I go out to eat, I already know I'm going to have leftovers from those monstrous portions you get at restaurants, so rather than waste food or (worse) get a styrofoam box, I bring my own. A small thing, but it makes a difference.
We are researching better environmental ways to deliver and serve our gelato (http://dolcefine.com) and ran across your blog. I think there's a great future in containers (cups, packaging...) that immediately break down, i.e. from exposure to water (I know of a company that uses styrofoam that does this). Unfortunately gelato is liquid-based and this would pose problems. I do see companies using corn and paper based products that decompose more easily. I certainly is a market that has hardly been tapped (in case there are any budding entrepreneurs reading this).
