Organic Little Black Dresses

Little Black Dress Rehearsal: Apparel Basics Week

09.18.2009

The Bite:
Wanna look fab on opening night? Let the curtains rise on little black dresses from some of our favorite designers, all of whom use skin-and-planet-friendly materials like organic cotton. Then break a leg.
The Benefits:
  • Looking smashing for any audience. The LBD is a classic that's not likely to go out of style; these versions each put their own twist on the concept.
  • Spotlights on eco-fabrics. Materials like hemp and modal (made from beechwood) don't take any oil/plastic to produce (unlike, say, polyester).
Personally Speaking:
Heather bought a hot little black organic cotton dress that hangs in her closet as a reminder that she's not allowed to skip yoga under any circumstances.
Wanna Try:
  • Beau Soleil Slinky Dress - slouchy, casual-chic, pocketed dress made from 70% bamboo and 30% organic cotton; it's short, so pair it with leggings if you're feeling demure ($295).
  • Nicole Bridger Loop Dress - modal draped just so over a fitted empire waistline in front, with a crosshatched back; calf-length ($235). Enter the code IDEALBITE during checkout, and get 20% off. Offer ends Oct. 18.
  • Juleselin Jenny Dress - thigh-length, organic cotton, cap-sleeved, collared dress with a fitted waist and draping in front; pockets on the sides ($148). Enter the code IB1009 during checkout, and get 20% off. Offer ends Oct. 18.
  • Kelly B The Wren Wrap Dress - hemp-spandex wrap dress with dramatic, ruffled shoulders and front, plus a side slit to show off the gams ($132).
  • Convoy Girls Night Out Dress - strapless dress with ruched midsection and mid-calf length; organic cotton blend with a little stretch; also in purple ($112). Enter the code bite20 during checkout, and get 20% off. Offer ends Oct. 17.
  • Lav & Kush Mini Dress - knee-length, organic cotton dress with lots of little details: buttons, ruffles, front pockets, empire waist, and puffed sleeves ($90). Email info@greenisblack.ca with your order number and mention Ideal Bite to get free shipping.

Cocktail Fact

Before Coco Chanel popularized the LBD, people typically wore black only in mourning.

Bang For The Bite

If 10,000 Biters opt for a dress made with organically produced fabric, we'll keep the weight of almost 60,000 stagehands in pesticides out of the environment and off our bods.

I love the Bang for the Bite tip, but I think we can still keep the weight of those stagehands out of the environment if we buy that LBS from a thrift store or borrow one from a friend. Zig
I am encouraged that there are many designers out there who are being aware of the environmental impact of their garments. How exciting to find so many clothing lines that are starting to accommodate this desire. However, I am very discouraged to find a lack of plus-size clothing that also is working to fulfill this need. Each of these LBD are truly that, LITTLE, black dresses. Us curvy girls also are mindful of the impact and want to be able to participate in making a change through our clothing (and other) choices. I have been a subscriber to Ideal Bite's tip of the day for a few years now. I've gone through the themes of parenting, partnership, back to school...all of which are topics I am not a part of at this time in my life, but I still read them to gain knowledge. If I may, I'd like to suggest a topic, or at least maybe one tip, that would celebrate the curvy green girl (or guy, for that matter). Or even if there's not an entire tip day (because maybe it would seem like singling out a specific group of people?!?!) why not include at least one plus-sized option when having links during clothing weeks or when there are other options. Thank you for listening to my suggestion and keep up spreading your message. By the way, I love the new design you've come out with for the tips...great graphics and layout!
If you wanna be a real vehicle to help green the planet read up on the manufacturing of fabric from bamboo. It's not at all cool and I wish you would not promote it. As a building material it is sustainable and awesome but not for wearing........ Love ya! Mean it!
I agree with Zig. I purchase 90% of my clothing from thrift stores. And I have a fabulous wardrobe!
Cute stuff! I really like the Lav & Kush dress. I agree with Zig and Sheila that secondhand clothing is a great option too.
Hemp is close to becoming almost as ubiquitous as it was back at the beginning of the 20th century, before big oil and pharma corporations started touting products made with oil as "better." Here in Canada we got hemp clothing with style! Check out Nomads Hemp Wear (http://www.nomadshempwear.com/) and Efforts (http://www.efforts.ca/) Nomads has a great LBD too! Hi! Whereas I know that being overweight is probably bad for the environment (more fabric, more pesticides, more weight in transit), in the meantime, I would love to purchase eco-friendly clothing; however, I have noticed very, very few brands, even those mentioned here, even go into plus sizes! Everyone is missing out on an opportunity here. Plus, it almost feels like discrimination - for those of us who can fit into a XS or S, here are some fab clothes - no news for the rest of you. Would you please consider scanning for and reporting on plus-size clothing options?
I didn't even read travelinjewel's comment before I posted mine! LOL I fully agree! We are all a part of this, and even if we just make a few changes, we can still do the world some good. Thank you for encouraging such an open forum and for doing such an awesome job of presenting information in such a light-hearted and interesting way. It definitely makes it easier to get the message out to people, and I know I always look forward to the little factoids, too!
I too go to the thrift store, or borrow to be planet and wallet-friendly. These are a little pricey for my budget.
Desertstella - so great to read your comments and to recognize that I'm not the only one feeling this way. Power to the plus size woman! :)
