Personally Speaking

Heather is a self-proclaimed foodie whose tastes run from healthy (Dr. Weil's The Healthy Kitchen is a fave) to horrifically bad for you (Nigella's mac and cheese, anyone?). To get her favorite red velvet cake recipe, visit today's blog, but be warned: soooo not good for you.

The Best Red Velvet Cake EVER

OK, so yesterday, we thought about eating in things in season. Since berries are in season right now, here’s my absolute favorite red velvet cake recipe (courtesy of the lovely people at Epicurious): http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/recipe_views/views/108256. It ain’t healthy, but use local, organic berries and buttermilk, and we can all pretend that we’re saving the world with every bite.

Meanwhile, here’s a shot of yours truly, carrying said RV Cake at a recent Earth Pledge dinner party…

-Heather… off to meet my prospective new landlord...

Biter Comments...
RV Cake is one of my favorite! ... the one my mom always made for my birthday. I've long been searching for a natural substitute for red food coloring in this recipe. We once tried beet juice. The color was there, but the cake had a very earthy taste -- not bad, but not what one would expect. So for now we are settling for 'brown velvet' until we can find a good substitute. Any proven ideas are welcome. Thanks.
Where do you find local in season cake flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, vanilla, sugar etc. etc. Doesn't sound like a local in season recipe. Just 1 or 2 ingredients?
On the Ethical Gourmet Tip: Reviewers on Amazon.com report that this book promotes genetically modified food and the use of pesticides to provide more food to the public and contains wrong information. I haven't read the book myself, but always check out reviews before purchasing.
I tried this cake at home, it's very tasty and all my friends liked it. It has healthy and tasty ingredients. This dish is a must for cake lovers. Thanks for this delicious recipe.
