Does green mean business?

05.07.2007

The Bite:
You bet it does. Nowadays, it can take more than blood, sweat and tears to start a company. A sustainable business degree (aka green MBA) teaches you the tricks of the trade to make sure your biz comes out on top.
The Benefits:
  • Forward-thinking. Green MBAs stress a triple bottom line: profit, people and the planet.
  • Green business is booming. Organic sales are growing at 18% per year; help keep the momentum going.
  • In a 2005 poll, about 30% of MBA students said they were disappointed in their program's sustainability offerings. Go for a program where being green is as important as being in the black.
  • Real-world experience. Most programs get you working with real businesses on real projects.
Personally Speaking:
When Jen made the honor roll for George Washington University's green MBA program, she wore green to the awards ceremony. But then again, she always wears green.

Cocktail Fact

The average increase in salary for MBA grads from their last full-time, pre-MBA job is 64%.

Bang For The Bite

You'll spend about as much as you would on a traditional MBA, but the exclusively green MBA programs are all located on the West Coast for now.

Was thinking of looking up some of them newspaper websites, but am glad I came here instead. Although glad is not quite the right word… let me just say I needed this after the incessant chatter in the media, and am grateful to you for articulating something many of us are feeling - even from distant shores. For those interested in dual degree programs that confer both a business degree (MBA) and an environmental studies or science degree (MS or MEM), which can teach more than a "pure play" or regular MBA program with sustainability course offerings, the University of Michigan offers a world-renowned MBA/MS program in Sustainable Enterprise that can be completed in 3 years. Other well-regarded dual degree MBA programs in green business that have been around for at least a handful of years are the MBA/MEM program at Yale University (SOM and FES) and Duke University (Nicholas and Fuqua). Any of these schools, or Bainbridge or Presidio, which you mention in your article, would be excellent picks for someone interested in making his or her career in green business.
