ECO-MASCARA

Mascarade Ball

08.13.2009

The Bite:
Wanna dress up your lashes? Be the belle of the ball with a few strokes of our fave eco-mascaras, which forgo typical nongreen ingredients like parabens. Phantombulous.
The Benefits:
  • Ballroom-ready lashes, for eyes that pop without having to constantly reapply or the flakiness of some of the eco-mascaras out there.
  • Less toxic parties. The FDA doesn't require companies to safety-test cosmetics before marketing them, so stick with versions made from ingredients you can pronounce - not ones with nastiness like mercury-containing thimerosal (mercury causes brain damage, BTW).
  • Revealing cleaner waterways. Synthetic chems can leach out of bottles you throw away and end up in water supplies, untreated.
Personally Speaking:
Even though most of the beauty products she uses are eco, Hanah wasn't sold on eco-mascara until she tried the Kiehl's version, which plumps so well (and lasts for so long) that she replaced her go-to brand.
Wanna Try:
  • Kiehl's Marvelous Mineral Mascara - potent volumizer with thickening acacia tree sap and softening jojoba oil. Made in the States and available in black or brown-black ($17/0.16 ounces).
  • Lavera Volume Mascara - organic essential oils such as wild rose hydrate; minerals lengthen your lashes. Also in blue and brown ($20/0.21 ounces). Enter the code IDEAL8 during checkout, and get 10% off all new and sale products (clearance and out-of-box items excluded) through Aug. 31.
  • Physician's Formula Organic Wear Mascara - organic fruit and veggie extracts, plus beeswax, help separate and thicken lashes ($8/0.26 ounces).

Cocktail Fact

Chemist T.L. Williams (founder of Maybelline) made the first mascara out of coal dust and Vaseline.

Bang For The Bite

If 10,000 Biters buy two tubes of eco-mascara instead of the regular stuff, in a year we'll keep a kitchen sink full of chemicals like mercury off of our lashes.

Miessence Organics also has a good organic mascara. And, it is a Biological Farmers of Australia registered product. You can check it out at http://yourorglife.mionegroup.com/en/product/14401
I just finished reading this tip and am excited about trying one of the suggestions. I was leaning towards the Kiehl's or the Physician's Formula. $17 vs $8 is a little expensive it seems, but I'm willing to give it a whirl. I have a hard time with mascara rubbing off underneath my eyes, made worse of course, with water and I've usually gone for waterproof varieties in the past. Has anyone tested the water-resistance of any of these?
Your tips are great, and I have been following them (as well as passing them along!) for years. But I haven't seen any cosmetics tips that refer to Aveda products. Is this becasue they are widely available, and possibly a no-brainer?
L'Oreal also has a great natural mascara called Bare Naturale. I love it, and it's only $7!
I am a huge mascara wearer, the only cosmetic product I use. I am so excited about this tip. I have a difficult time swallowing a $17 price tag on mascara that I use up in a month. I will probably try one of the less expensive ones first. Thanks again IB for the great tip.
Yeah! When I actually do wear mascara, I'd love to go eco-friendly (and healthier, non-irritating, etc.!). But the Lavera mascara that I tried a year or so ago smeared and made me look like a raccoon after I'd had it on for about an hour. (They didn't have a "waterproof" or "smearproof" variety... at this store anyway). That was a huge disappointment, since I'd spent over $20 on the tube and used it only twice. Might have to give one of the other brands a try.
Thank you so much for this tip! I have successfully transitioned over to paraben, pthalate and sulfate free skincare, hair care and makeup, but had not been able to find a good mascara that was safe and affordable!
Physician's Formula Organic Wear Mascara was THE WORST mascara I have EVER worn! Within a mere 3 hours I had raccoon eyes. I wasn't even rubbing my eyes, but somehow the mascara melted off and made its way all around lower lids. I was so disappointed to finally find an organic mascara, only for it to be awful. I ended up throwing it away because I didn't want anybody else to suffer the embarrassment of black eyes. Terrible stuff, I tell you.
Having been "blessed" with blonde lashes, I had always longed for the lovely dark ones offered by smearing chemicals on mine. A few years ago, an aesthetician offered the option of vegetable dye that lasts 4-6 weeks. Her products could actually be eaten, though I haven't taken her up on that offer. Now I get the lashes and brows done when I get a facial. It's lovely and relaxing and I wake up w/ the dark lashes I always wanted.
Another awesome brand of mascara is 100% Pure. They use fruit pigments for the color; there aren't any harsh chemicals in it. It is great if you have sensitive eyes and it if probably the best mascara I have ever used in terms of volumizing and smudging. I got it off QVC, but I imagine you can get it online too.
