BANG FOR THE BITE
apple

If 10,000 Biters opt for eco-hand cream instead of the regular stuff, we'll keep the weight of seven flight attendants in questionable chems out of production.

COCKTAIL FACT

Until the ban on lighters in carry-ons was lifted in Aug. 2007, the TSA collected about 22,978 of them every day; it cost taxpayers $4 million a year to dispose of them.

The Bite

Not if you join our club. A few lux eco-accessories, such as a neck pillow or bit o' lotion should help you relax - even if you're stuck in coach between a crying kid and some dude who keeps taking bathroom breaks in tandem with the girl across the aisle.

The Benefits

  • Getting comfy up high. Even if you don't get complimentary champagne and a personal TV, you can still travel in style.
  • Less eco-baggage. Per mile, plane travel creates more pollution than driving; opting for eco-travel goods helps offset this...a little.
  • Healthier globetrotters. The FDA doesn't regulate the ingredients of most personal-care products, so stick to ones that use body-friendly ingredients.

Personally Speaking

To combat the dry, stale air on planes Heather brings a mini-mister - and takes care not to shoot anyone else in the face when she uses it.

Come Fly with Me

One more thing to carry on: an attractive, dander-free, smallish-size human who's showered and equipped with an ample supply of eco-mints. If you can find one, go for the cheerful (but not too cheerful) variety who talks in moderation, uses the bathroom before they board (see this Friday's tip), won't take the window seat or hog the arm rests, gives you the leftover vodka from their Bloody Mary, and lets you drool on their shoulder in the event that you forget your eco travel pillow and list to one side.

That's if you've got the space.

Biter Comments...
SHEESH! What is it with you Bite staffers and alcoholic beverages. Is drinking the only thing you do for fun? From reading many of your blog posts, it would seem so.
I'm surprised that you have an email dedicated to air travel and fail to mention carbon credits! Carbon credits will do a lot more to off set the polution from air travel than some silly aromatherapy spray. This sounds more like an advertisement, then a true tip unfortunately...
I love your daily tips but I am strongly opposed to encouraging people to spray smelly things on airplanes. For those of us who are sensitive to fragrance this situation can lead to an incredibly uncomfortable and long flight. I am all for relaxing travels but when someone sprays something smelly near me it makes me feel sick and gives me a horrible headache.
Another suggestion, altho not really "green" (but not harmful). When flying, take your own cover for the back of the seat where your head rests. It doesn't get cleaned and I had a friend get lice from a previous less-than-hygienic traveler.
Possibly not a 'green' idea, but works for me - I take and wear a dust mask for flights. Do you think they change out those air filters all that often? Last flight was an overseas flight, and the last thing I wanted was to be sick a couple of days into my trip. Worked for me - didn't get sick!
Another great idea for travel is this new line of sandals called p h o o t l e r y...they travel like jewelry, save on space and packing but not on style! She also has a line of eco friendly uppers coming out! www.phootlery.com in the news: http://thefashioninformer.typepad.com/informer/2008/05/phootlery-sandals-one-well-heeled-traveler.html http://www.genartpulse.com/archives/2008/06/phootlery_chris_ann_phelan.php
Hi, I love my Bites, and I'm wondering where you got the numbers for the "Pee in the airport" bite... that one flush = 6 car miles? Seems incredible... citation please?
