BANG FOR THE BITE
apple

Go on - rub it in. Shea butter is coconut oil's eco-fab African cousin.

COCKTAIL FACT

In some uber- traditional parts of Togo, women aren't considered ready for marriage 'til they can make shea butter.

Thought you'd never try another moisturizer after you discovered coconut oil?

The Bite

Same here, until we discovered shea butter...and now we have two favorites. Creamier than coconut, shea's reparative properties make it ideal for parched pores.

The Benefits

  • Naturally moisturizing with lotsa vitamin E, it helps treat burns, eczema, scars and stretch marks.
  • Eco-friendly. The vast majority of shea is produced without irrigation or pesticides.
  • Support women workers. In Burkina Faso (the #1 producer of the stuff), shea's known as "women's gold," since it's the ladies who traditionally harvest it.

Personally Speaking

Jen gave TerraNova butters as stocking stuffers last Xmas and got her immediate fam hooked on the stuff - even her bro can't get enough of the butta.

My Mom’s Hooked on Shea

When it comes to the world of personal care products, many people refer to me as the devil.

I don't think I have a female friend on the planet who I have NOT hooked on some product or other.  My mom is no exception.  Currently, her nighttime bed routine involves shea butter application on dry elbows, feet and hands.  So, once again, I'm sort of the devil for introducing an addition to the routine.

I figure it could be worse.  I could be trying to get everyone to drink as much wine as I do instead...

The Body Shop also has great products and 5 core values: Against animal testing, support Community Trade, activate self esteem, defend human rights, and protect our planet. Check out the fabulous Shea Body Butter: http://www.thebodyshopathome.com./web/smuirhead/products/overview.do?catalogId=tbs_34559&attribName=KEYINGREDIENTS&ingredientId=INGREDIENTID&xcatalogId=tbs_bodybutter&superCatalogId=tbs_body
I LOVE shea butter!! I've tried a couple different brands before I found the perfect one. It's called Shea Terra Organics. They are not only about mixing and concocting the most yummy lotions, scrubs, and other luxuries, they're also about social justice and truth in their product from the ingredients to the final outcome. They carry shea from E. Africa which is creamer than from the W. They also carry shea in bulk so you can make your own with essential oils and such. But don't take my word for it, check them out for yourself! :) http://store.africansheabuttercompany.com/index.html
I too have been singing the praises of Shea Butter on my blog. It's by far my favorite body product of the winter! (http://mindfulmomma.typepad.com/mindful_momma/2007/02/as_soft_as_a_ba.html) I use the 100% pure Shea Butter from Pre-de-Provence. I LOVE the product (and the price - at $14.95 for a 2.5 oz tin) but I'm not sure how the company rates from a fair trade perspective. Anyone out there know?
My all-time favorite shea butter product is Cheeky Baby Butter from babybearshop.com. Helps keep my skin (and my babe's) silky smooth.
Another great brand is EnfuselleĀ® Spa Ultra Moisturizing Shea Butter Cream. Buy it here! http://www.shaklee.net/goodgreenfun/product/32534
I personally get my shea butter from Karite Gold...read their "customer reviews" section...hundreds of personal testimonials. I prefer the "pure unrefined" without any essential oils or frangrance...for those that want something more "fragrant"...they have a nice selection too. http://www.karitegold.com/
All the products mentioned here are very pricey ($14.95 for only 2.5 oz???) compared with my fave: Nature's Shea Butter (www.naturessheabutter.com), which offers a full line of products. I highly recommend 100% unrefined, all natural, *whipped* (goes on easier) shea butter: 8 oz. for only $11.50, 16 oz. for $21.50. They offer a great sample package of their 10 best sellers for only $5.00. And they are such nice folks, too. Just the best.
I also like Shea Terra Organics products. And I think its interesting what they say about fair trade practices. http://store.africansheabuttercompany.com/warning.html
On your advice I went to Purely Shea Organic Shea Butter's website, and although they list a $20 price, they don't say anywhere how many ounces of shea butter it buys. I usually buy it from people wearing dashikis at swap meets, where it's packaged in plastic cups. No middle man and the product's divine!
I started using Purely Shea (www.purelyshea.com) over the summer and I love it!. I use it as a facial moisturizer and a little goes a long way as I am still using the same container I purchased in August. I get so many compliemnts about how smooth and radiant my skin looks. I recommend Purely Shea to everyone.
Ya know, I'm the product queen in my group too. If I find something that works, you bet I'm going to let all my girls know. I recently got my mom hooked on Olive body butter. She loves it!
I, too, love shea butter. It really makes your skin so soft. Carol's daugter also sells products with shea butter in them and she sells pure shea butter too. You can get it from here: http://www.carolsdaughter.com
Shea butter is so awesome. My husband says I think shea butter can fix any skin problem. I have sensitive skin, it works wonders. Tesoras sells items with Shea butter in them. They even have a 100% whipped Shea butter. you can find it at: http:// www.Tesoras.com
