BABY FOOD

The Bite:
When does "here comes the airplane" sound better than usual? When that plane's carrying eco baby food. Try to go for organic and filler-free options for a healthier baby and planet. Vrrrm…
The Benefits:
  • Spoon-fed health. Organic versions don't contain the fat, fillers, salt, and sugar your baby doesn't need. And since pound for pound, babies eat more than adults, toxins in conventionally grown food affect them more.
  • More topsoil for the planet to swallow. Organic farming can produce 6 inches of healthy topsoil in as little as 50 years (it takes nature about 3,000 years to produce the same amount of topsoil).
  • Baby-size costs if you DIY. Preparing your own baby food can save you major bucks.
Personally Speaking:
Mama Bite Editor Alison sneaks bites of Jack's Harvest Peas with mint-flavor puree while feeding her little girl, Roxie.
Wanna Try:
Premade
  • Jack's Harvest - organic purees in heart-shaped "cubes"; first stage includes yummy Papplesauce (peach, apple, and cinnamon). Locate a store here ($11/12 ounces).
  • Happybellies Dry Cereals - organic, mixed-grain cereals; perfect as your baby's first foray into solid foods ($24/six 7-ounce canisters).
  • Earth's Best Baby Food - organic jarred options tailored to different development stages. Find a store ($5/six 2.5-ounce jars).

Cocktail Fact

In the Social Security Administration's 2008 baby names report, Barack jumped more than 10,000 spots in popularity - from 12,535 (in 2007) to 2,409.

Bang For The Bite

If 10,000 Biters dish up a serving of eco baby food instead of the conventional stuff, we'll keep the weight of 71 jogging strollers in pesticide-treated food outta kids' bellies.

just wondering if the plastic ice trays are known to be detrimental in any way? Does freezing water in plastic affect the ice differently than freezing a puree? and, is aluminum any better?
When my babies were babies I used to make my own baby food for them all the time. In fact one tip I loved to share with others was to prepare large batches of the veggie or fruit that we were introducing, put them into ice cube trays and then all I had to do was pop one out and heat it up a little on the stove to melt it - healthy, and ready to enjoy!
For those new to "grinding your own" baby food.....it is so easy and your baby eats what you do, so socialization with the family at mealtime is extra special for all. I never purchased a jar of baby food for any of my children. My oldest is 26 and in graduate school at MIT, my next child is 22 and a nationally ranked swimmer at Div I school and my 3rd child is 17 and has a 4.3 GPA and a phenomenal cellist! Breast fed then fed organic veggies and fruit pressed by hand through my little hand grinder. Also fresh Alaskan halibut and organic chicken livers pureed easily through the grinder. If I had too much pureed food I froze the leftovers in ice cube trays and popped one cube out and warmed up for the next meal. Of course our veggies and food I added more garlic and spices...never to the babies, but generally they ate what we did. It's fun and easy and saves you $$$$.
Tyler Florence has a new cookbook "Dinner at My Place", which, as you might expect, features those recipes he cooks regularly for his family. The "Baby in the Kitchen" section has a great collection of babyfoods that are easy to make, free of additives and cover all the day parts.
Since when does organic have to do with whether or not there's fat, sugar, salt or fillers? While I will concede that there is a tendency for organic food to be a bit more whole and less processed, it is just as easily processed and salted, sugared, etc as anything else. I buy organic when it counts and make my own baby food as much as I can but with twins, no daycare (splitting care at home with hubby) and working full time, I admit I buy their food some times. In fact I could not find a single ever-lovin pea anywhere that wasn't frozen and salted! So I gave in, I bought them organic baby food peas. I also bought their carrots (organic), rice cereal and oatmeal at the direction of our pediatritian.
Aluminum is a known neurotoxin. I certainly would not recommend cooking or storing food in any aluminum container.
we recently bought a silicone mini muffin tray that said it was safe for the oven and freezer, and have been freezing our pureed baby food in it, popping out the servings (perfect size for a 7 month old's meal), and storing them in yogurt containers in the freezer. Does anyone know of any health issues associated with freezing food in silicone?
If you make your own baby food, skip carrots. They concentrate nitrites from the soil which can be harmful to babies and young children. Commercial baby food producers test nitrite levels before production.
How about Sprout Organics? I love this baby food as much as my son - I have to confess to sneaking bites of his food!
babies. Actually babies are the main and an important part of our lives. When a baby born in a family, then he or her name becomes a major point. Mostly people do not know what would be the name of their baby. If you also have a baby and want to get a unique and favorable name, then you must get help from Baby Names Resources. You can also get some help for the usage of your kids like Humidifiers Vaporizers, Food Mill and Night Lights that retain the health of your babies. If you want to save the best and most memorable moments of your babies and also want to keep them captured in a camera, then you can get their Photos Portraits as well.
