The Benefits:
- Reduction of toxic chemical use: conventional flowers use 10-100 times more pesticides than conventional fruits or veggies.
- Safer for farmers and farm workers.
- Promotes long-term sustainability of farmland.
Personally Speaking:
Whenever we can, we buy organic flowers from companies that buy direct from the growers. Supermarkets and conventional florists often purchase their flowers from other countries where chemical-use and labor standards are not regulated (not to mention the additional gasoline and energy involved in transporting harvests to your town). And if organic flowers are not around when you are in a pinch, consider buying a bottle organic of wine instead, which is usually more available.
