ECO-CONDOMS

Overpopulation Equation

07.10.2009

The Bite:
Seven billion people + more on the way = …? One Mama Earth with a whole lotta people to look after. In honor of World Population Day (tomorrow) try on an eco-condom for size. It won't hurt your body or the planet - 'cuz the way things are going, we're gonna need more decimals on our calculators very soon.
The Benefits:
  • Subtracting consumption. Over a lifetime, the average North American will throw away 600 times his or her adult weight in garbage.
  • No calculus required…just a condom. To the 38% of Americans who don't use contraception while hoping to avoid pregnancy: seriously? With biodegradable, vegan, and nontox options available, condoms are way sexier than a few years ago.
  • Multiplying animal populations. Fewer people traipsing around slows environmental destruction (about 25% of the world's mammals are endangered due to lost habitat).
Personally Speaking:
Cola-flavored eco-condoms: at last. (Er…)
Wanna Try:
We're not really sure why these all have to be made so far away (c'mon, American manufacturers!), but at least some are available through American retailers.
  • Sheer Glyde Dams - latex dental dams made ethically in Malaysia; includes a cola flavor. Also: male condoms ($5-$10/12).
  • French Letter Aphrodisiac Condoms - rose- and vanilla-scented, fair-trade condoms made from FSC-certified rubber latex; three other varieties also available ($15/12).
  • Condomi Condoms - an assortment of vegan latex condoms from Germany - including XXL and fruit-flavored versions ($5/15).
  • Condom Depot - not vegan, but it only stocks condoms without Nonoxynol-9 (a spermicide in conventional condoms that carries similar risks to parabens).

Cocktail Fact

In MN, it's illegal to sleep naked.

Bang For The Bite

If 10,000 Biters use biodegradable condoms every time they make a little love, in a year we'll avert enough polyurethane to fill 223 outdoor trash cans.

From my own personal experience, I would like to point out that some of the options people have been discussing here simply are not viable for everyone. First, there are non-hormonal IUD's. They are simply copper coils, with NO HORMONES! I thought this was a great idea. I had so many problems and complications as a result of having one put in, I would NEVER recommend them to anyone, ever. I am in a completely committed and caring relationship, and we have discussed NFP. However, I have an incredibly irregular cycle. This makes NFP unreliable. I agree that for most people it's great, but I, and many other people, can't use it/trust it. Therefore, the pretty much the only other non-hormonal option that has any serious viability is condoms (again, difficulty with access to diaphragms). This doesn't make me a bad person, although after reading some of the messages posted above, one would think so.
For those primarily concerned by climate change: some condom manufacturers are making their products less carbon intensive but are not even telling us! The health and well-being message which needs to be got across is (rightly) deemed more important than 'green' condoms. The chairman of the company which makes the Durex brand recently detailed how much less carbon intensive Durex condoms were becoming in a quietly-released eco-article, but their normal PR refuses to pursue the message. The company gains by reduced production costs and we gain from making our nocturnal habits less carbon-intensive!
The "greenest," or most natural form of "birth control," is the "no method" method. It's natural, no waste, promotes the natural spread of human life, in keeping with the natural spread of life into most every niche, of nature.

There's no assurance that natural sex within responsible stable marriage, will always guarantee another precious darling baby, but it's a nice prospect to allow to happen, as God would allow. There's also no assurance that shoddy Big Pharma contraceptive potions and poisons, that seek to fool mother nature into thinking pregnancy has already occurred (the Pill) or sabotage the body's natural reproductive rhythms/function, will even work and not have a shoddy experimental contraceptive "failure."

More and more people would be glad to live, so encourage large families worldwide. The world can hold, or be made to hold, far more people, likely far more people than there will ever be.

I would like to add my tuppence worth. I use an IUD as my birth control method, now that I'm settled down with one person. Depending the brand you use, it lasts for five to ten years. Fabulous! One little piece of plastic, with a bit of copper around it. Magic, no babies! Almost no pollution!

I've decided there are enough people on the planet and that I don't need to add another one. In fact, I don't consider it a great favour to put a person onto this polluted, corrupt planet. Regarding global warming, water crises and food shortages, the worst is still to come. As I result of my choice, I have a life with a lot of freedom, disposable income, travel, sleep, paid-up property, time to read and a happy relationship. I would like to suggest that other women consider a childfree life. Frankly, it's fantastic! And combines well with an environment-friendly lifestyle.

Jane, from the "sassier shade of green" tagline, to the pictures of adult women, men, and wine in the e-mails, to the contents of tips (including makeup tips), and the categories of tips (which include not only "sex and romance" but also "office," and "travel"- things kids under 13 shouldn't really be worrying about), it's pretty clear that Ideal Bite is meant for adults. If parents don't appreciate questions from their kids about sexuality, perhaps they either a.) shouldn't be letting their kids use the Internet and e-mail unsupervised, or b.) shouldn't have kids. (That would help the overpopulation problem!)
The Pill does more then contraception, so making those of us who take it feel bad is really unfair. Yes, a daily pill is not optimal and the fact that hormones are added to the water makes other options better. But there are legitimate medical reasons why some stick with it (like hormone balancing). Also, using the Catholic church's approved method ("natural" family planning) isn't for everyone. Having unprotected sex in a situation where children are not wanted, even a monogamous relationship, is needless when condoms are such an easy device.

Just wanted to say great job with the blog, today is my first visit here and I’ve enjoyed reading your posts so far
