BANG FOR THE BITE
apple

If you get a last-minute invitation to tea with The Queen and left behind your formalwear, you might be stuck, but if 10,000 Biters flying cross-country pack just five fewer pounds, we'll avert more than one American's yearly CO2 emissions.

COCKTAIL FACT

More than 20,000 rats eat among human guests at the Karni Mata (rat goddess) temple in Deshnoke, India, and it's considered good luck when rats run across visitors' feet.

Feeling like the long tail is the only difference between you and a rodent?

The Bite

Lighten up. Now that many airlines allow only one checked bag, it makes sense for your wallet and the planet not to take your whole rat's nest with you on your trip.

The Benefits

  • A not-so-ratty planet. The less you take on the plane, the less fuel it has to use - and emissions from planes contribute to global warming at 2-4 times the rate of land vehicles (such as cars).
  • Saving up for an eco-exterminator. Last month, AirTran joined Continental, Delta, Northwest, and US Airways in charging customers who check more than one bag - and United and American charge even for one.
  • Easier scurrying around your destination. Fewer bags mean less hassle. (Plus, most hotels offer necessities such as shampoo and hair-dryers.)

Personally Speaking

Jen's trick to packing light is to pick one base color (black or brown) for all of her outfits so that everything she brings is easier to mix and match.

Wanna Try?

  • Pack everything you wanna bring, then take out about 1/3 (getting rid of outerwear and a couple pairs of shoes makes it easy).

The Tank

Packing makes me anxious - it's hard to anticipate what I'm going to wanna wear. In college, I did a six-week study abroad in London. In addition to the backpack that I brought for weekends in Paris and Amsterdam (that's another story), I brought a gargantuan suitcase for all the rest. One of the guys on the trip dubbed it "The Tank." I wouldn't describe myself as high-maintenance, yet the not-so-eco size of that piece of luggage means swallowing my words.

As I was packing for the Ideal Bite job training in Jan., I was haunted by my rep for overpacking and refused to bring The Tank with me on my four-day trip to SF. I edited my belongings down to my faves, and then committed it to my carry-on-friendly suitcase. I was stoked about not having to check my bag; however, as I tried to cram it the overhead compartment, I began to break a sweat because it wouldn't squeeze in there. The guy in the seat next to mine politely tried to help, but to no avail. He, too, was shortly schvitzing in his suit, and we had an audience. The stewardess suggested that I check it, which made me grimace. Seeing my displeasure, she gave me an extra bag that I used to minimize my suitcase. And, at last, it fit. Phew.

Oh, well this just *sucks*! I'm heading back to college for my last quarter to graduate. I'll be there for 10 weeks, people, and I most assuredly *need* two pieces of luggage. *headdesk, headdesk*
That's all fine and dandy if you're traveling as a single adult person. I have done many flights in my days with only a small carry-on. However, my life has evolved to include two small children and packing light is certainly a challenge. We definitely need to bring our own car seats for the car at our destination. Last time we flew, car seats didn't count as baggage - hope that stays the same! But, to reduce the amount of other STUFF we needed to bring, we opted for renting baby gear from a local company set up to provide parents with all sorts of things you might need. We rented a double stroller, pack n play with linens, and they even had a little baby cabana for the beach. It was brilliant!
Yes. Very good post! worth to visit!
I hate packing and I hate large suitcases. Actually I am glad that the airlines reduced the size and weight of the bags. Now you take with you only the essential stuff. I remember before when I travel to Europe I would pack so many clothes that half of them I would bring back unworn.
