Climate Change

Political Punditry

The Bite:
We interrupt your regularly scheduled tip-reading to remind you that even in the midst of all the chatter about health care and the economy, there's still the climate to consider. Whether you're more into Maddow or O'Reilly, get on your high horse and let your senators know you want 'em to keep the environment top of mind. Back to you…
The Benefits:
  • It's the right time to get the facts - there's a new climate bill going through the Senate, and the UN's Copenhagen talks on climate change are coming up fast (in Dec.).
  • Think about what's best for you, the planet, and your pocketbook, then make your own decision, and write or call your senator - we know you Biters like to mouth off from time to time.
Personally Speaking:
In between gabbing about the latest celeb OMG moments and the new season of Entourage, we've been chatting about the upcoming decisions on climate policy - and thought we'd bring you into our water cooler discussions.
Wanna Try:
  • U.S. Senate - alphabetical list of the senators, with quick links to their online contact forms. (Check out the blog to see the sample letter we whipped up that you can copy and paste.)
  • ABC News - Q&A on the climate bill the House passed.
  • Environment & Energy Daily (PDF) - find out where your senators stand.

Cocktail Fact

The Waxman-Markey bill in the House (to help slow climate change) passed by just two votes in June.

Bang For The Bite

Keeping on top of issues that you're passionate about is fulfilling, and letting off some of that Biter steam through an email to your reps is great too.

You guys should have included a link to the tck tck tck campaign, considering the fact its holding demonstrations world wide leading up to the copenhagen talks in december to try to convince as many countries as possible to vote yes for a strong climate treaty, also the fact that it is supported by a large group of big activist organisations such as greenpeace, oxfam, amnesty international, wwf etc etc. link: http://www.tcktcktck.org
This would have been the perfect place to let people know about the free carbon footprint card we sent Idealbite about 5 months ago that educates people about the amount of CO2 consumed in daily activities. www.soprisfoundation.org Also, people should know that October 24 is International Climate Change Day and all over the world there are thousands of actions taking place as a led up to the UN meetings in Copenhagen and to help our leaders realize we need a real solution that pays attention to the science. www.350.org It would be great if you could encourage people to get involved and join an action in their community!

Was surprised but pleased to see this crucial reminder of how important it is for us to stay politically involved!! Let's not forget that our Senators and Represenatives are supposed to work for and represent us!! Letters and phone calls are very effective ways of getting their attention. Every community has action groups that are making a difference in the lives of the people who live there. Getting involved will help make the changes we need community by community.
Good tip about caring for our planet, but I think in general we should keep politics out of our "bites". I have many friends who don't believe in climate change but love your daily bites. Since I was the one who turned them onto Ideal Bites, I'm the lucky one who gets to take the flak from them. (The other side insists carbon dioxide is what our trees and plants need to survive.) In fairness, according to many science websites such as www.purgit.com/co2ok.html "Flowers, trees, and food crops love carbon dioxide, and the more they get of it, the more they love it. Carbon dioxide is the basic raw material that plants need..." On a personal level, I do sincerely thank you for caring about our environment.
Karen, I would advise your friends to look into the issue a little more, or check out http://www.grist.org/article/series/skeptics/ There was a study done that proved increased CO2 levels make trees grow larger, however there were fatal flaws that made the study irrelevant. Namely that the CO2 was sprayed down into the canopy (instead of released in a treeless area like a highway or factory complex) in a rainforest (where nutrients, water, and sunlight are never a limiting factor). These thing's weren't mentioned by the study conductors because the funding came from Exxon Mobile. Make sure your information is verified and the studies are credible when you incorporate that information into your way of thinking.
