BANG FOR THE BITE
apple

If 10,000 Biters recycle a DVD instead of chucking it, we'll keep the weight of 69 coffee tables in plastic and paper out of landfills.

COCKTAIL FACT

The first music CD ever manufactured was Abba's The Visitors, released in 1982.

Ready to eject your old CDs?

The Bite

Pause before you chuck 'em. Now that MP3s and Blu-ray hi-def movies are taking over, CDs, DVDs, and VHS tapes (and their cases) are going the way of the phonograph. After you've converted or burned them, recycling is easier than skipping to the next song.

The Benefits

  • More space for everything else. When was the last time you actually listened to that copy of Kenny G's Greatest Hits?
  • CDs that don't play the earth. Each month, more than 45 tons of CDs become obsolete and end up inlandfills and incinerators - and in landfills they can take centuries to biodegrade.

Personally Speaking

Toshio found a record store in Portland that pays cash for any CD - yes, they even took Celine Dion.

Wanna Try?

  • Greendisk Technotrash Pack-IT - recycle any electronic waste in your home (up to 20 pounds) through this mail-in service ($7).
  • Ripstyles - Lazy Biters: opt for its LXRY service, where it'll burn your albums for you and recycle your jewel boxes (prices vary depending on volume).
  • ACT Recycling - recycle videocassettes and computer disks through an org that provides jobs to disabled people.
  • DIY Bite: Many nonprofits such as Goodwill will take your old CDs, DVDs, and computer games. You can also exchange them for cash or new media in used movie/music shops, or online.

Scooby Doo(wnload)

I dream of the day when I can download all of my favorite movies and shows to my Apple TV-no waiting for shipping, no wounds from wrangling those hard plastic cases (I realize that might just be me), no springing for DVD media binders, no storing those binders, no flipping through all of those binders to find what I'm looking for.

But in the interim, I've been downloading the odd film or TV show from the currently very slim offerings. I hadn't done a drunken iTunes shopping spree for awhile, so this time I took my impaired judgment to the TV, and found myself downloading a 1969 Scooby Doo episode - a classic: "Go Away Ghost Ship". I had more fun than maybe I should have watching "the gang" weed their way through the thin, predictable plot in their Mystery Machine.

But, you know, one was enough. So, here's to the future of buying exactly what you want, no more, no less. No packaging, no recycling.

Biter Comments...
i buy my new music through itunes exclusively, but as a woman of a certain age.... i've lots of cds in their jewel cases from years past. i dig trading them on www.lala.com. post what you've got, list what you want and lala arranges the trade. each trade is one dollar and the artists make 20%. tra-la-la!
Another swap site is swapacd.com. If you don't want CDs in return, you can transfer your credits to use at their other sites, paperbackswap.com (my personal favorite) or swapadvd.com.
I think SwapTree.com is the best way to get rid of your old CDs. You can swap books, CDs, DVDs, and video games.
used cd's can be turned into so many art pieces or adorn an entire wall. I've seen them used to create amazing light globes and one which stacked them up, glued them together and, with the insertion of a narrow or single-stem vase, the most adorable high-tech vase. Don't toss them anywhere - let your creative genious glitter!
After thinking long & hard about how to recycle old cds & jewel boxes I've decided to string them together to make a room divider. Another idea is making clocks from cds. I've seen a number of these at local art fairs.
Here in Germany, farmers and land owners hang them on the trees near the roads (especially the back roads) so that car and truck lights reflect off of them causing the deer to be deterred from coming onto the road. IT WORKS GREAT!! Since the CDs are "all weather proof" they last a long time, dont have to be replaced and no one had to invest any new money. They just recycled something into something new that is saving both the deer and the drivers. I think it is a great idea.
from the "personally speaking" section today... toshio, where is this portland record store you're speaking of?
I have no intentions of getting rid of my CDs. After what I read just the other day about MP3 sound being not as good as CD or even vinyl, I have no interest. If this is true, I can't understand why anyone would even bother with MP3, except for the convenience factor. One thing you can do with no-longer-wanted CDs is make them into clocks. You can supposedly get the parts for doing this at any crafts store, and then you can sell 'em for about $10.00 each.
