BANG FOR THE BITE

Helping out at farm sanctuaries is like the best petting zoo experience ever, since you're doing good while having a good time.

COCKTAIL FACT

Zebra-donkey mixes are called zebroids, zonkeys, or ze-donks.

Oink you craving some fuzzy love without the long-term commitment?

The Bite

Say "cluck you" to euthanasia. Moo-ve your butt and volunteer at a farm sanctuary - a safe haven where homeless animals are protected and treated like the good, earthly neigh-bors they are.

The Benefits

  • It's good for you. We already know that being around animals helps us live longer, and helping out at a farm for a day can be kinda fun, anyway.
  • Saving lives. Farm sanctuaries take in animals - such as retired racehorses, former lab rabbits, and livestock too sick to be sold for meat - and care for them (thanks to dedicated volunteers...like, maybe, you).
  • Something for the resume. Employers and college admissions boards take into account the fact that you're helping out in the community.
  • Picking favorites. Many farm sanctuaries specialize in certain animals, such as ducks, horses, and rabbits - so you can work with your faves.

Personally Speaking

When Jen lived in Ireland, a nearby farm sanctuary was flush with donkeys because they live up to 40 yr and often outlive their owners.

Wanna Try?

  • Farm Animal Shelters - directory of farm sanctuaries in 16 states.
  • Horsearama - lists almost 50 horse sanctuaries across the United States.
  • Farm Sanctuary - donate, or write a letter in support of humane treatment on farms.

Watch and See

A few weeks ago, I watched a few of the undersea episodes of the amazing Planet Earth series, including the one where they happen upon a vampire squid. So there's a crappy YouTube video of it, but the proper footage from the DVD is far more impactful.

Anyway, it truly blew my mind, changed my perspective on the world just like the idea of black holes or the idea of gravity affecting time.

How does this relate to farm sanctuaries? Well, the fact is that animals are amazing - even the less exotic ones. They make the world more interesting. And it's worth taking the time to notice, even better if you can help them out in the process.

Biter Comments...
I think idealbite is trying to make up for that crappy daily bite on Kosher meat by having a farm animal friendly tip. Well, I'm very happy that your promoting such great organizations. Farm animals don't get nearly enough love from the public unless they are professing love for a farm animal on a plate. Interacting with these beautiful animals allows people who only know them as pork, beef, etc to see that they are no different from dogs or cats. It's just the way we treat them that is different. Still wish you guys responded to the kosher meat bite that was sent out. The information was just so misleading.
Lovely tip, and this is something I would really enjoy doing (especially working with horses because they're my second-favorite domestic animals, after dogs) but, wouldn't you know it, NONE of those sanctuaries is anywhere NEAR me! It figures! {:-(
So true! I think all animals are amazing. I think I also found a better version of the video you posted: [url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5ZQH2Uzpew&feature=related]here[/]
