BANG FOR THE BITE
apple

If 10,000 Biters opt for a jacket with recycled fiberfill, we'll take 140,000 plastic bottles out of the waste stream.

COCKTAIL FACT

Too wet for an umbrella: In 1979, 43 in of rain - the heaviest 24-hr rainfall ever recorded in U.S. history - poured down on Alvin, TX.

Wish the rain, rain would go away?

The Bite

Too bad it doesn't work that way. Prep for April showers by stocking up on eco-raingear, since in our experience, the weather gods are pretty stingy with granting rain checks.

The Benefits

  • Wetting yourself over the eco-friendliness. Manufacturers are coming up with more and more creative ways to repurpose materials (like plastic bottles) to useful effect, instead of making more PVC plastic.
  • Getting home and dry. Green raingear defends you from the wet just as well as conventional options.
  • Wet dream-worthy looks. Just 'cuz it's ugly outside doesn't mean your outfit has to be.

Personally Speaking

The SF team recently volunteered in the Muir Woods redwood forest on a rainy day - hauling rocks, it turns out - but the wetness didn't faze Toshio, who came prepped in his Nau raingear.

The Sunniest Day of the Week
Last Sunday, as I was hanging out in the best park in the world, Dolores Park, soaking in the rays with good friends and thinking about how if I died right then and there I'd be OK with that, because my life was generally pretty awesome, I did not realize that I might owe the sunny San Francisco weekends of late to CO2 from cars.

Or at least, that pollution could explain why it rains more often during the week than on weekends. So says a new NASA report, which attributes the greater tendency for rain to fall on weekdays to human-generated pollution.

So maybe they call it "Sunday" for a reason.

Biter Comments...
love you guys and I was excited to see an eco rain gear tip, but I was kinda disappointed in your products selection - some of us can't afford a $200 raincoat!
Elena- For those of us who don't want to drop $200 on a raincoat, there's the most eco-friendly option of all: picking one up at a thrift store. On something as infrequently worn as a raincoat, I'd rather spend $5 on it and give the $195 to a rainforest conservation charity.
i second the request for LESS EXPENSIVE clothing tips. perhaps less expensive tips for everything would be nice. the majority of us live in the real world of financial struggle. what say you?
I can "third" the request for LESS EXPENSIVE clothing tips- hello, a $65 umbrella???
In the search for less expensive though, one must be aware of what is being sacrificed. If it's cheap, it might be made of organic bamboo fiber, but in a chinese factory where they use child labor. Also, while the bamboo itself is grown organically, chemicals are used to make a soft fabric out of the fibers. That's just one example.
Don't wish the rain to go,go away! For those of you out there of the mind set that they want the rain to go away,WAKE UP! Our thoughts our powerful! Instead, envision, and speak of balance. I want all the healthy seasons on our planet NOW! I want the earth to rebalance NOW,and it is! It's not positive thinking really. It's creation thinking. I am really wishing/hoping people will stop complaining about the weather. I've heard it nonstop all winter,oh I wish it were'nt snowing,or raining, blah blah. Then in the summer it's often,oh I wish it wasn't so hot etc. Times that by thousands of grumbling complaining negative musings and wahla! The weather gets wacko! We can all do better than this. We are more powerful then we realize. Check out,and change your thinking, and your life. The intenders of the highest good- http://www.intenders.com It's helping me change slowly but surely for the better. Do you really want the rain to go away,or the snow,or the sun? The seasons are awesome!
I also have to say we need more affordable suggestions. Thrift stores are a great option, but sometimes the selection and sizes are very limited. If you don't live in a city, and you don't have a lot of money, there are still ways to buy eco-socio-whatevero conscious. It is really easy to find these options online but they are always so expensive. I can find those myself. I need idealbite to help me with the hard to find *affordable* products. Don't let us down!
Does it really take an almost $200.00 raincoat or pair of boots to to solve the climate crisis? You really should try to avoid the temptation to cater to high-end "green" clientele -- that approach will make you just like every other media outlet these days that seeks to peddle Hybrid Lexus SUVs and EnergyStar rated SubZero refrigerators to the upwardly identifying masses...
