BANG FOR THE BITE
apple

Don't let your previous crimes against gastronomy get you down - hot presentation can be (almost) as important to a dinner party's success as the meal itself.

COCKTAIL FACT

At the dinner table, the Amish seat themselves men on one side, women on the other, in line from oldest to youngest.

It's party time: been banned from the kitchen?

The Bite

If you're the person who shouldn't be allowed near the kitchen, make the dining room your domain instead and serve up an excellent presentation.

The Benefits

  • Even if you burn microwave popcorn, you can still whip up a table that's sure to impress.
  • Settings made from renewable materials like bamboo are sustainable; and eco-candles are better for indoor air quality.
  • If the conversation's slow to start, eco-options will give 'em something to talk about.

Personally Speaking

This tip is all for Jen, who can't cook to save her life. However, she's found the perfect icebreaker for parties: Take some gin, vermouth and olives, mix 'em all together and presto - guests' conversatin' will be flowin' like the 'Hooch. Now she just needs to find an unsuspecting guest who'll do the cooking...

I can bring home the bacon and set a mean table

Okay so the thought of bringing home real pig strips disgusts me, but you know what I meant.

As you probably know, I don't cook.  I would love to know, don't get me wrong, I just lived in NYC in my formative cooking years, and hence all I know how to do is dial for delivery, or heat up an Amy's organic burrito.

So I learned to excel in other areas.  I love to clean dishes, and I love to set the table. The most productive thing I learned over Xmas break one year was to make fun napkin settings out of CLOTH napkins (paper napkins are so tacky anyway; if you aren't using cloth you are missing out!). Plus this exercise gave me something to do with my grandmas.

This is one of my favorites, a bit phallic -so be it.  Good conversation starter: www.napkinfoldingguide.com/07-crown/

Off to pick some wild flowers for a center arrangement... just kidding! - Jen

Biter Comments...
I just read the Fortune Magazine article on WalMart turning green. It was very encouraging! Yesterday I made a trip to WalMart. There were NO green products in their home cleaning departments and no evidence anywhere in the store that communicated their commitment to becoming a leader in green retailing. It all seemed a bit hypocritical. I want to communicate with Mr. Walton and Mr. Scott, CEO and President but do not have their email. Any suggestions on how I might find it. Thanks Anne
Hey Anne - the best way to put the pressure on would be to write an op ed for your paper, or send the idea to your paper to have them do a story on it. Rock on.
