Does safely disposing of your old TV require getting off your butt?

07.30.2007

The Bite:
Yeah, but not much more than that. Recycling your old idiot box is so easy that, well, an idiot could do it. And it's so quick you'll be ploppin' your potato back down in front of your new Energy Star flat screen before your show's back on.
The Benefits:
  • Less trashy TV(s). Electronic waste is growing at three times the rate of other municipal waste, but it really doesn't have to.
  • Cleaner groundwater. TVs contain toxins like chromium, lead, and mercury. If video killed the radio star, just think what it does to our groundwater.
  • It's easy. Listing it for pickup online or taking it to a drop-spot involves 99.9% less mystery than an episode of CSI.
Personally Speaking:
It's been about 10 years since some of us have owned TVs, which is a pain for the TV-heads on the team who have to constantly explain their refs to Lost.
Wanna Try:
  • Freecycle - if it still works, list your TV here and arrange for someone to pick it up.
  • Earth911 - enter your zip code to find nearby TV recycling facilities.
  • Energy Star - a directory of energy-efficient brands for your next TV purchase.

Cocktail Fact

According to Nielsen Media Research, Americans are watching more TV than ever: an average of 4 hours and 35 minutes per person per day.

Bang For The Bite

If 10,000 Biters recycle their TVs instead of trashing them, we'll keep the weight of 3,720,000 Russet potatoes in trash outta landfills.
