Eco-Spa, on the cheap
When I first entered business school, I intended to concentrate in eco-tourism. See, I had this business plan for an Eco-Ranch, and I concocted the whole notion while in Ireland running an equestrian center, feeling so good to be using my body again and getting my hands dirty, after 4 years in NYC startups / 70-hour-office-job-weeks.
Therefore, once in grad school in DC, I networked in with all the eco-tourism players that be, and before I knew it, I was off to an eco-lodge in Costa Rica to consult.
Now, did this place offer massage, water with cucumbers, or pedicures? Absolutely not. But did my body-mind-spirit feel amazing after returning? Absolutely.
My butt was massaged with the amazing horse back ride, my arms were massaged with white water rapids, my legs by climbing trees on a pulley, my spirit soured through the trees on a zip line, my soul melted with the squirrel that had breakfast on my shoulder each morning, and my mind was calmed with the crazy hospitality of our host.

If you want to dream big about an eco-adventure, think about Whitepod Eco Camp in Villars, Switzerland (www.whitepod.com). It's about $500 per night, all inclusive, but it comes with 120km of ski runs. Guests sleep in two person pods with a wood burning stove but no running water or electricity. Oil burning lamps and flasks of water are the alternatives. Not exactly a place for pampering, but gorgeous nonetheless.
There is an awesome GREEN Medi Spa in Falls Church VA that only uses all organic and chemical free products. The owner has put her heart into everything. Check it out www.dermahaircare.com

1. Read the hostel's microsite thoroughly. These have a full description of the hostel along with pictures too.
2. Read past customer comments and ratings. You are invited to review the hostels in terms of security, cleanliness, fun, staff, location and character.
3. Book in advance to ensure you get the type of room you want. If you are looking for a private double/twin room, but leave booking until the last minute, you may not get the type of room you want.
4. Make sure to bring a lock with you. All hostels provide lockers for valuables, although some provide the lockers actually inside the room, although you'll need to have a key to lock it.
5. If you plan on partying in the destination make sure there is no curfew in the hostel where you are staying!
6. If you want to be able to cook for yourself to save money on eating out, make sure the hostel you want to stay in provides kitchen facilities.

To find hostels you only need two web addresses:
1. www.hiusa.org for listing of HI affiliated hostels in the USA and elsewhere. Hostelling International hostels are the best because we have to maintain fairly high and uniform standards, we get inspected at least once a year and any complaints will be addressed by the national organizations.
2. The booking service www.hostelz.com because they try to list ALL HOSTELS, even those that do not subscribe to their booking service (many HI affiliated hostels use the HI hostel booking only, not be bothered with additional paperwork and expense from the multitude of commercial hostel booking sites).
Hostelz also features descriptions from the hostels and from their staff, as well as independent reviews from travellers. The travel reviews often are inaccurate because normally only disgruntled travelers bother to write reviews.
Many travelers complain about our 11PM curfew which was imposed by our neighbors. Since we're the first smaller hostel (many have curfews and lockouts for economic reasons)visited by travelers that stayed at the big 24 hour San Francisco hostels we get a fair number of bad reviews. They either hate us or love us.
One traveler complained that it was the worst three night he ever had. Couldn't wait to leave. We're not a prison and don't lock up our guests.
Sorry hostelworld and hostels.com and many other only list those hostels that use their booking service. There are many more fine hostels out there (especially HI hostels) than indicated.
If you want to party, get drunk (and have your stuff stolen) go elsewhere. Don't bother staying at our HI Hostel.
Why would you want to spend more than $3/hour for 8 hours of sleep?
Why not have a kitchen available to heat a can of beans or cook a fantastic meal?
