ORGANIC VODKA

Russian Roulette

07.29.2009

The Bite:
Willing to leave your vodka choice to chance? Try a round or six of our favorite organic vodkas. They're all sure shots.
The Benefits:
  • Not triggering any climate change. Organic farms emit about 60% less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere compared to conventional farms.
  • Deadly good drinks. Whether you wanna mix or just drink straight outta the bottle, these are way better than your average Russian potato water.
Personally Speaking:
Check out our tips for infusing your own vodka (candied ginger and habanero? Yes, please) in the blog.
Wanna Try:
  • Tru Vanilla - great wheat-based vodka; for every bottle produced, the company plants a tree, and at 70 proof, you can drink a little more than you normally would ($35/750 milliliters).
  • Square One - 80-proof, martini-ready, supersmooth rye vodka from a female-owned company; produced in part with wind power ($33/750 milliliters).
  • Rain Organics Honey Mango Lemon - fruity and easy to drink straight; distilled from white corn using limestone water, which adds crispness; 70 proof ($20/750 milliliters).

Cocktail Fact

Author Graham Greene (The End of the Affair) claimed to play Russian roulette regularly as a kid, to the extent that it became "no more exciting than taking aspirin for a headache."

Bang For The Bite

If 10,000 Biters enjoy two organic vodka drinks instead of cocktails made with conventional vodka, we'll keep eight martini glasses worth of pesticides from pouring into the environment.

I'm all for Organic but 2 of the 3 are poisonous for me. I have Celiac Disease which means gluten makes my body attack itself. Gluten is a protein in wheat, barley and rye. I'd love to support Tru Vanilla and Square One but not at the expense of my health. I'd contact them directly but I have given up on getting responses from any liquor company.
I am a recovering alcoholic so while I appreciate the attempt to "green" liquor companies, I prefer not to read about it. Thanks.
I have physical and/or psychological diseases as well, but I'll refrain from the AM confessional and spare the attitude towards the hardworking staff biters for talking about... oooh... alcohol. If the mention of vodka is such an affront, may I suggest exploring the parental controls on your web browser? Try clicking on "block all sassy content" but make sure you keep "enable all self-obsessed judgement" on.
Another yummy one is Prairie Organic, distilled in Minnesota. It is so smooth you don't even need a mixer!
Another great organic vodka is Vodka 14, distilled in Colorado. Most of the bottle consists of recycled products and can all be recycled. They have a good commitment to their farmers and the environment. http://www.vodka14.com
I second David's comment. Just because you have an addiction does not mean that you get to spread your misery to all of the rest of us. If you prefer not to read about it, then don't. Man, there are a lot of tight-arsed remarks on the comment section these days!
Well its not organic but Vodka 360 is Eco-friendly! They print their Eco-Audit on every (recycled) label detailing the environmental benefits of the packaging. They even include a prepaid envelope to return the bottle topper to be recycled. Its a deliciously smooth vodka that will make you feel good about going green!
I don't think it's organic, but Fire Fly (based on Wadmalaw Island, SC) makes an unreal Sweet Tea Vodka. Best yet, the tea they use comes from the only tea plantation left in the United States, just 5 miles down the road from Fire Fly's distillery. For sweet tea lovers, it's dangerously good.
Thank you, David, for pointing out how much the miserable love to spread their misery. I wonder if these folks call their cable provider to complain when a beer commercial comes on? If you have an issue, then ignore the bite. We don't need to know about your allergies or addictions. Good grief.
Herbal tinctures made from Organic Vodka...Now THERE's a thought! Thanks for the heads up! ~Regina
