BANG FOR THE BITE
apple

The average price for a single film print is $0.67 overall.  Digital prints can cost as little as 10-12 cents - a better value that saves on resources, especially when only printing the pictures you absolutely want.

COCKTAIL FACT

For privacy reasons, South Korea requires that all camera phones make a “clearly audible sound” whenever a picture is taken.

Why are digital cameras leaving film camera manufacturers with red-eyes?

The Bite

Snap-shot film is so 20th century! Industry experts predict that by 2006, digitals will outsell film cameras 5 to 1, and it’s easy to see why this trend has, ahem, developed.

The Benefits

  • Cost-effective – although purchasing digital camera printing supplies can be expensive, you can create proofs before you print, saving paper and ink.
  • Instantaneous - not sure if you blinked in that last photo? All digital cameras have on-the-spot view features—and more importantly, a delete button, so you aren’t creating any wasted prints.
  • Fewer chemicals - photo processing includes the use of chemical and silver fixatives that require disposal in off-site recovery systems.  Digital pictures are printed with much safer ink printers (especially if you go with recycled cartridges) and save paper by printing only the pictures you want.
  • Easy to Share – attach to emails and send, or put up free photo albums on sites like O-foto and Snapfish (both sites provide printing of faves for about $0.12 - $0.15 a pop).

Personally Speaking

How can we not love the instant gratification of being able to check out our photos right away so we can trash the ones where we look like idiots?  (No one is allowed to discuss one of the early yoga shots of Heather in the blog).

Wanna Try?

  • HP Photosmart M417 - For the snap-shooter who wants a cheap and easy camera with all the necessities (around $180).
  • Nikon D50 - For a serious amateur this is a fun high-end professional camera (around $800).
  • Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT - For the professional, get one of the highest rated cameras in quality and performance (but with the high price tag - around $1000).
  • CNET’s guide - a great guide to purchasing digital cameras and printers.
  • The Digital Photography Review - the internet's digital photography bible.

Enter Heather, Vampiress.

There is something wrong with me. If you take a digital picture with me in it, something invariably gets messed up. Your
camera gets stolen, you erase the entire disk or everything
double-exposes in a medium where that can't really happen (all true
stories).

Because of this oddly vampiric digital photo tendency, I have yet to get a digital camera. It's on that list of things to buy "someday" (alongside an apartment and new running shoes). Until
then, I slog along with my regular film camera, always feeling a little
guilty at the smell of the developer chemicals and the volumes of
photos I throw out so that no one can see the bad shots...

-Heather... off to dream of that little tiny Sony digital camera the size of a credit card...

Biter Comments...
TRUE! I was a victim by association. We spent an entire night doing a photo shoot for this big press piece we have yet to get, and the photos were deleted in a stroke of whackiness.
Btw, I think that "audible click" requirement is a very good thing. I like to know when somebody caught an embarassing moment on film (digital or not), not to mention the possibility of my bikini shots from a public beach appearing in some web "amateur porn" gallery...
Vex - Ah yes... but what is going to happen to my other career as a covert operative if I can't take silent, stealthy spy pics? Then again, the bikini concern is a good point. ;) H

Ciao, Valentino - I spent a week in Massa Lubrense on the Sorrento Coast several years ago.... Bellissima... How did you find out about Ideal Bite? I KNOW we need to start Ideal Bite Italia...
