BANG FOR THE BITE
apple

Besides being unique, healthy and earth-friendly, natural scents cost less than designer fragrances (probably because they don’t spend their money on bad ad campaigns).

COCKTAIL FACT

In addition to flowers, the rose family of plants gives us apples, pears, plums, cherries, almonds, peaches and apricots.

Looking to spoil (or seduce) someone with a fabulous scent?

The Bite

Until we really nail down how to use pheromones correctly, choose perfume scents for yourself or your main squeeze made from all-natural, sustainably-harvested ingredients, and waft through your days like the earth god/goddess you are.

The Benefits

  • Avoid phthalates.  Phthalates are found in fragrances and other personal care products and are linked to genital abnormalities in baby boys (read: don’t let today’s aphrodisiac scent wreck your future kids’ chances of having the same fun…).
  • Avoid loving a scent to death. Over-harvesting of rosewood (a key Chanel No. 5 ingredient) has almost eliminated this plant from the Amazon. Look for sustainably-harvested botanicals.
  • Wear natural, cruelty-free fragrances, and rest easy knowing that no bunnies (or other critters) are being harmed.

Personally Speaking

Heather has had a long love affair with Aveda custom blends (although to be honest, she still can’t give up her Annick Goutal), while Jen lets her deodorant be the only scent she sports.

Wanna Try?

  • Aveda – Try “Love,” a blend of organic ylang-ylang, jasmine and rose with sandalwood and other exotics.  The sandalwood is sustainably harvested by Australian Aboriginal communities for a fair wage, and processed without chemical solvents ($21).
  • The Body Shop – Wear any of the nine “Invent Your Scent” fragrances alone, or mix to create a signature scent ($30).
  • Aubrey Organics – 100% natural unisex colognes made from herb and flower essences, no synthetic ingredients, and vegan musk ($9.65-$19.30).
  • Mandrake Apothecary – Try a four-scent sampler of cruelty-free artisanal blends made with natural botanicals ($30).
  • Find a product list tested for phthalates at Not Too Pretty, or search the Skin Deep database to see what’s in your fave.
  • Like the smell of cruelty-free? Check out the Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics’ fragrance guide.

How Do You Smell?

So perfume, or no perfume?

Jen and I differ on this one. I like it. Jen just throws on her deodorant and goes with it. (She smells just fine, and I'm a freak about how things smell and have no problem airing her dirty laundry, so I'd tell you if that weren't the case).

While I do love my Aveda perfume (I got it for going in on my birthday last year: if you sign up to their mailing list, they give you a coupon for free stuff on your birthday), I gotta be honest here:

My absolute favorite perfume is not an all-natural one. In fact, it's something that I generally have my French friends pick up for me when they are heading to NYC from Paris. So all-in-all, it's a pretty unsustainable fetish - no matter that it is made from essential oils and natural plant derivatives. But since I get about one bottle a year, I think it might be a dirty non-green secret I can live with since I cut back my heating bill and sold my car. There're only so many sacrifices a year I can handle.

Anyone got any all-natural faves out there to suggest?

-Heather... off to research pheromones...

Biter Comments...
I'm not a big fan of perfume, because it usually gives me a headache, but I like The Body Shop's Oceanus. It's light and fresh. Although after checking out the EWG's Skin Deep website, I'm a bit freaked out about using any of my toiletries now.
I love the scent of essential oils- and have a small collection of my favorites (including Ylang Ylang, Orange Blossom and Lavender)-- though I do have to admit they don't last as long as I'd like- staying potent for 10 minutes or so and then fading and so when out on a date or a night on the town will wear *cough* perfume- which have that lingering advantage.....
I noticed that you guys didn't mention Body Time for a good place to get natural scents. Body Time has a wide range of great smelling natural perfumes as well as all round body and beauty care products. I am not a big fan of chemical perfumes, since I'm kind of sensitive to strong scents, so I use their natural lotions, to which you can add the scent of your choice. You should check them out.
More of a question than a comment...I'm a male biter trying to green up my life, home, giftgiving, etc. as much as I can, bite-by-bite, day-by-day and wondering if there is a good male scent along the lines of Davidoff's Cool Water, which is my favorite. Any help would be welcome!
Hey Biters - just got hooked on Terranova's perfumes. AMAZING stuff. Mad about their Mimosa Kiss Organic Perfume... SO amazing. Check 'em out at: http://www.terranovabody.com/
I am also a fan of just pure essential oils.My favorite ever is my signature patchouli...however it seems people either love patchouli or hate it!Unfortunately,my DH is one of the haters,so I have to be cautious about wearing it!I also have an aphrodesia essential oil that he LOVES.....go figure:)
Smell is cool
