BANG FOR THE BITE
apple

If 10,000 Biters unplug their PlugIns for a month, we'll save enough energy to power a typical American house for about 17 months.

COCKTAIL FACT

The plant with the largest cluster of flowers in the world - titan arum - is also one of the smelliest plants in the world; it's nicknamed "corpse flower" because it smells like a decomposing mammal.

Got a stink that won't let you unplug your nose?

The Bite

No need to "plug-it-in, plug-it-in." Instead, hit that stink with a stick: reed aromatherapy diffusers, which work like  lightly-scented candles or air fresheners, but last longer and let you stick it to energy waste.

The Benefits

  • Not "plugging it in." At about 2.1 watts, those plug-in deodorizers don't use tons of energy, but none is even better.
  • Sticking to what's essential. Some of those air fresheners are kinda dirty, containing chems such as carcinogenic phthalates; most reed diffusers use only essential oils.
  • The scents stick around. Diffusers last hundreds of hours - way longer than your average scented candle.
  • Hitting rooms with the pretty stick. Plug-in fresheners don't always go with your décor, whereas natural reeds in a beautiful glass look good anywhere.

Personally Speaking

One of us on the team (who prefers to go unnamed) asks guests to shake the Botura bamboo reeds in her bathroom after they go.

Wanna Try?

  • Botura - great earthy floral scent with geranium and patchouli ($43).
  • Dani Eco Diffuser - comes in six nature-inspired scents, such as clover and fresh fir, and its packaging is biodegradable ($30).
  • Ilio Modern Air - made using sustainably grown rattan reeds; also in six fragrance choices, including clean- and sweet-smelling D'anjou Pear ($29).
  • Method Aroma Sticks - choose from cut-grass or sweet-water scents; has darker reeds and a ceramic vase ($15).
  • VI Reed & Cane Reeds - just reeds if you wanna create your own scent-and-bottle combo ($10-$16/100).
  • DIY Bite: Mix 15-20 drops of your fave essential oil with 3 cups of H2O in a spray bottle to use as a room spritzer.

Stink-bomb Diffusers

We have a reed diffuser in the WC at home. The scent in the water is a pretty mild "Dogwood" that could use some fresh essential oil, and it doesn't work as well as the scented-soy-candle-and-a-match trick for squelching bad smells, but (assuming you opted against the spinach burrito at last night's dinner) it does the trick.

Biter Comments...
While I'm all for diffusers that use pure essential oils, I find it VERY disappointing that you recommended Method's Aroma Sticks in today's eco tip. Synthetic fragrance oils are anything BUT eco friendly!
I love to diffuse essential oils through a glass globe nebulizer diffuser. In my opinion, those work the very best and also have a cool space age look to them. Changing the essential oils allows you to customize it based on your moods. Blue chamomile with french lavender will make you chill and the color looks so pretty in the globe. Grapefruit with bergamot makes a happy, uplifting blend; so does peppermint and rosemary. If you like intense floral scents, the precious oils of Turkish rose and jasmine will make you weak at the knees! It's fun playing. The diffuser can be seen here: http://www.diffuserworld.com/detail.aspx?ID=25
I never really iron my clothes, or the kid's clothes, so I save money on plugging in the iron. when drying clothes in the dryer, I just allow the clothes to tumble dry, but I never let the dryer stop with the clothes still lying in there. I check the clothes when I think they are dry, or when the buzzer on the dryer let's me know they are about done. I always take the clothes from the dryer "while" they are tumbling dry. the dryer stops when I reach in, and that's when I have all my hangers already, and folding is also done. the pants are folded in the way I want the crease to be maintained, because when you fold, or hang clothes "while" they are still hot, they hold that order. I think it's because when they cool in the possition you put them in, and they remain that way until you reach to wear them, it does the trick every time. anyways, it works 4 me![smiling]
THANKS IDEAL BITE for posting about this. those plug in diffusers are also one of the major causes of home fires. they are not only toxic, but more susceptible than blow dryers or other electronics to catch on fire.
Ok you advertize this site as inexpensive 30 to 4o some dollars for a room freshner is not cheap ... what gives ... lol ...
I saw a plug in that caught fire the other day. It was in a house for sale. Could of been worse.
They are nice, but be sure to put it in a low traffic zone. I knocked mine over last week and the oil went all over my antique wooden desk! It left a stain, which I was able to clear up with some wood treatment oil. My room will smell like lavendar for the rest of my life though. ha!
It's also nice to have diffusers if your roommates light candles and forget to blow them out when they leave the house...
What is the topic for this week end?
For many people who have asthma (and statistics show way too many of our children have this problem these days!)the use of heavy scents is an irritant. I find that many small retailers are so heavily scented that I can't even shop comfortably. I occasionally have to leave friend's homes because they have too much "air freshener" in the air. It's not very refreshing! So many of us live in sealed environments that are basically unhealthy for us, and the use of heavily seented "air fresheners" is simply masking other problems.
Those diffusers are just odor coverups, like any other perfumey air freshener, it's just natural instead of chemical, that's all. I don't want to just cover up odors, I want to GET RID of 'em, so I use Lysol NeutraAir. Yeah, yeah. I know it's an aerosol, but, c'est la vie, and at least CFCs were eliminated years ago. Besides, I don't need to use it all that often, anyway.
As much as I like this idea, I was given one of these as a gift and cannot use it. I live in a small apartment and the smell is overwhelming. Enough to irritate my sinuses. While I would very much like something scented to "help" between the time one of my cats decides to smell up the litter box and I can clean it, I would like the air to be breathable! Maybe a better choice for a house or a milder scent then the vanilla almond I have? I am still sticking to my gingerbread Method soy candle for now.
