The Benefits:
- Softness worth praising. Currently, there's no perfect substitute for virgin tree fibers (recycled fibers are, by nature, shorter, and thus coarser), but you can get a softer eco-tissue.
- Not sucking up forests. If every U.S. household opted for a box of 100% recycled tissue instead of a box of virgin-fiber tissues, we'd conserve 163,000 trees.
- Not kissing (g)ass. Most tissue paper's bleached with chlorine, which can combine with chems and gases in nature to form harmful toxins, so look for chlorine-free or oxygen-bleached.
Personally Speaking:
We were skeptical that we'd find anything close to soft enough to get us through cold season (most '90s-era recycled tissue paper was akin to sandpaper), but these did the trick right nice.
Wanna Try:
After testing five of the easiest-to-find options out there, here are our softness winners...
- Green Forest Facial Tissue - 100% recycled and bleached without chlorine; just about as soft as conventional brands and available at Whole Foods ($3/175 tissues).
- Purely Cotton Facial Tissue - not paper, it's supersoft and made from cotton linters, a by-product of cotton production ($4/96 tissues).

What a bargain: In December, a tissue used by Scarlett Johansson sold for $5,300 on eBay (proceeds went to a nonprofit).
Bang For The Bite
If 10,000 Biters choose a box of recycled tissue paper next time they buy, we'll keep about six trees standing.
