Who started the teensy-portion trend?

The Bite:
Maybe baby. Prepare your tot's lil' bites organically at home to keep 'em healthy and save adult-size cash and resources.
The Benefits:
  • Saving cash for tasting plates. Per ounce, premade baby food can cost five times more than homemade (you can also use the money you save to splurge on organic produce).
  • Raising healthier foodies. Commercially processed baby foods sometimes contain added fat, fillers, salt, and sugar that your baby really doesn't need.
  • Less of a snack for your landfill. In just their first year, babies eat about 600 jars of food, and we Americans only recycle 15% of our baby food jars.
Personally Speaking:
As a teen baby-sitter, Heather sometimes sneaked spoonfuls of apricot and plum Gerber baby food. Mmm...
Wanna Try:
  • KidCo Happy Baby Food Grinder - portable, dishwasher safe, and made using safer plastic - polypropylene ($16).
  • Petit Appetit Cookbook - 150-plus recipes for kids up to four years old, including veggie and/or wheat-free options ($15).
  • Wholesome Baby Food - online hub for baby food recipes and info.
  • DIY Bite: Just bake or steam fruits (try apples, bananas, or plums) or veggies (try carrots, peas, squash, or sweet potatoes) and puree them in a blender or food processor, then serve (just make sure they're cool). To save for later, freeze puree in an ice cube tray and cover with foil. Thaw and use frozen cubes within a month of freezing them.
  • Aluminum Ice Cube Tray - option for Biters who wanna avoid the plastic trays ($10).

Cocktail Fact

In a joint study, American and French researchers found that an average U.S. portion of food was 25% larger than a French one.

Bang For The Bite

If 10,000 Biters make their own food instead of buying individually packaged containers, in a year we'll save the weight of 20,000 food critics from eating up landfill space.

I have twin babies, and I make my own baby food. Even with twins I find the time to do it, because it's so important to my babies' health. I wouldn't have it any other way. And, this way, they get to try things like avocados that aren't usually sold for babies.
