BANG FOR THE BITE
apple

If 10,000 Biters choose shaving soap over an aerosol can of cream, we'll keep the weight of three Bigfoots in steel outta the waste stream.

COCKTAIL FACT

Through the age of 75, the average American man spends 37.5 days of his life shaving.

Beginning to look a lot like Bigfoot?

The Bite

So shave, already. Lower your impact with old-school shaving soap, which requires less packaging and costs less than bottled creams, for a look that's more sleek than sasquatch.

The Benefits

  • Less packaging. You'll avoid aerosol cans (which aren't recyclable in many areas) and needless packaging, which accounts for 1/3 of the trash we send to landfills.
  • Saves money. Shaving soap (even eco brands) is cheaper than cream and lasts longer too.
  • Be less prickly. (Psst...42% of women prefer a clean-shaven man, while 31% prefer a five o'clock shadow.)

Personally Speaking

Of the Biter boys on staff, Brett uses cream and Toshio never shaves, so Heather took it upon herself to try using the shave soaps on her legs. She liked the results but is sticking to sugaring.

Ain’t no stubble gonna get in the way of my kissin’!
No way - I will kiss my sweetie no matter how cactus-like his cheeks. But I admit to coveting lots of old-school gentlemen's trappings, not the least of which is ye olde mug-'n'-brush shaving set. Sure, I can pull off wearing the occasional bow tie (kind of), pat a bit of rum-scented cologne behind my ears, take a sip from a plaid-covered flask, flip through a first-edition Hemingway, but I'll never really be able to use that big, fluffy brush to work a dab of lavender-infused shaving cream into foamy facial fun...

But who's to say? Maybe in addition to the foot-long hairs that will supposedly start sprouting out of my ears and nose during old age, I'll grow a beard...

-Jenifer Morgan... off to pluck my eyebrows...

Biter Comments...
I use miessence certified organic shaving gel: anniesorganics.mionegroup.com:80/product/11111
May I also recommend that if you get a shampoo or conditioner and find it disappointing on your hair, it usually will work just fine as shaving cream/soap (for legs; I can't imagine it working so well on faces).
Why not just shave with regular bar soup? That's what I've done my whole life with no problems....there's no need to even buy specific "shave" soap.
To shave my legs, I've pretty much always let my body wash do double duty instead of spending the extra money for fancy creams. While we're on the topic of shaving though, may I point out that Recycline also carries recycled (and recyclable!) shaving products: http://www.recycline.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=0_22&osCsid=9e5eacc8b2859a95cf3d068bb748346b
I just don't shave so problem averted.
I just buy an electric shaver every seven years or so. No blades, soaps or anything else required. The only resource used is an hour of electricity once a month to recharge the battery.
Hi, Thanks for the kind words about our shaving soap over at Old West Soap Co. We pride ourselves on making every tin one at a time by hand using all natural ingredients. We also have a whole line of other all natural soaps, lip balms and bath salts. Check us out! :) http://www.oldwestsoapcompany.com
The Old West Soap Company shaving soap is just incredible. First, the soap makes the most incredible lather that doesn't dry out your face like the commercial shaving creams do. Second, it just feels good to apply the soap with the shaving brush. I'm totally sold on this soap and will never go back to conventional shaving cream.
Cromwell and Cruthers Shaving Oil is my blade lubricant of choice. It is made of a variety of plant oils (safflower, sunflower, grapeseed, sweet almond, jojoba, avacado, aloa vera, sandalwood --with vitamin E)and comes in a very small bottle -- very easy to travel with. One bottle lasts months, since you only use 5-6 drops each time you shave your face.(Can't say I've tried it on legs) And better yet, it doesn't dry out your face as will some soaps.
There is just something so utterly romantic about finding an old fashioned shaving set in a guys bathroom. If your going to go the shaving soap brush route make sure to always hang your brush bristles-side down. It will keep it from mildewing along the base and help the brush last longer. I really dread the day I have to shave. I have to mentally prepare to be in the shower longer and to be tedious. I found that more natural soaps like the ones from Sabonnyc.com (particularly the Mud Olive Oil and Honey Vanilla Wheat Olive Oil) have been the best at slicking my skin and moisturizing. Using a scrub before shaving seems to help the process go "smoother" too :)

in my four years of working at Shobha i still opt for sugaring instead of waxing or using a razor. it's a natural alternative that is made of only sugar, lemon juice and honey. its gentle on the skin but still gets hair from the root and you just need warm water to get rid of any remaining stickiness when your finished! check out our Shobha's Shohba sugaring kit for home use.
