Want to know the secret to making your springtime bulbs truly bloom?

10.13.2005

The Bite:
It’s October 13th – get to planting!  In order to blossom, spring flowers such as tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths need the cold of winter to jumpstart their growth cycle.
The Benefits:
  • Longer-lasting flowers!  The bulbs need 4 to 8 weeks of exposure to soil temperatures below 45°F in order to bloom this year and for years to come.
  • Depth is important.  Bulbs should be planted 4 to 12 inches deep to survive frost and physical abuse from animals.  Depth differs by bulb type, so read directions.
  • Fertilize naturally. If you want your bulbs to come back year after year, use bone meal to help the bulbs take root.
Personally Speaking:
Our bodies are like machines. Once the crisp fall weather sets in and we start wearing sweaters, we are programmed to hit up the nursery for our favorite bulbs.  Heather is partial to daffodils and Jen loves her tulips.
Wanna Try:
  •  Breck’s Bulbs – stunning bulbs and planting tips, both for springtime and year round.
  • White Flower Farm – gorgeous tulip options.  Family owned and operated since 1950.
  • Planet Natural – get Steamed Bone Meal to work in as you plant the bulbs to help them take root.

Cocktail Fact

In 1637, the Dutch tulip market crashed in the first-ever stock market boom and bust.

Bang For The Bite

Planting spring bulbs is a great way to get kids interested in nature and teach them the benefits of patience and nurturing attention.  But it’s not gonna save the rainforest.
