GETTING INVOLVED

Tau Biter Sigma: College Week

08.20.2009

The Bite:
Know a student rushing for a greener coeducational experience? They could order organic beer kegs for the next frat party, or they could join an organization on campus and help the planet, find pals, beef up their resume, and (most likely) skip the hazing.
The Benefits:
  • Pledging to help the planet. Organizations like Amnesty International and Sierra Club depend on student volunteers for tasks such as organizing letter-writing campaigns to corporations and even lobbying Congress for or against certain bills.
  • Fraternizing with others. Joining campus clubs is a great way to meet friends (maybe even dateable friends) with similar interests.
  • (O)mega resume payoffs. Hiring managers (63% of 'em) consider volunteer activities relevant experience - showing commitment to causes, plus picking up leadership and technical skills can pay off once you've got your degree.
Personally Speaking:
The animal rights group Toshio was involved with during college helped phase out glue traps (for rats) on campus.
Wanna Try:
  • Do Something - search here by cause, location, or how much time you have to contribute.
  • Check with the student activities office on campus for info on student-run clubs. If you don't find a group you love, check these tips (animal rights oriented, but you can apply them to other areas) on how to start a college organization. Then check for grants.

Cocktail Fact

Hazing is illegal in 44 states.

Bang For The Bite

Finding time for volunteering can be tricky, but it'll connect students with other students, help the planet, and sometimes even open up job opps.

I supposed the reference to organic beer was meant to be kind of cute, and college students will drink, but remember that most college students are underage.
Why so bitter Ideal Bite? You help to dispel myths about the ‘how difficult it is to be green’ but continue to perpetuate the myth that social fraternities are only about drinking. Most – if not all – national fraternities have some of sort of community service requirements, from working with the homeless population to women escaping domestic violence. And talk about beefing up a resume: 85% of the top executives in the Fortune 500, including CEO's of 43 of the top 50 companies were greeks and over 85% of the student leaders on some 730 campuses are involved in the Greek community.
This bite was ridiculous you can be Greek and green. Not to mention the hazing quip was not funny. The Greek community takes hazing seriously so stop with the stereotypes.
