BANG FOR THE BITE
apple

If 10,000 Biters ran a mini-washer instead of a top-loader to get out a stain on a single article of clothing, the collective water they’d save could run the top-loader 9,000 times.

COCKTAIL FACT

In Air Force slang, a “laundry bag” is a parachute.

When you're faced with a stain, do you reach toward the washer or a sponge?

The Bite

No one loves to give a sponge bath, least of all to their clothing. But inevitably, things get spilled, and a sponge bath using natural stain removers is better for the planet than running your washer for just one shirt.

The Benefits

  • Save water. The average washer uses 40 gallons per load.
  • Cleaning products, including traditional stain removers, are responsible for nearly 10% of all toxic exposures. Keep yourself and your kids out of harm’s way by using non-toxic alternatives.
  • Protect animals. Opt for cruelty-free brands.

Personally Speaking

Ideal Bite team members Sara and Toshio spent the better part of an evening drinking wine in order to come up with today’s subject line and then test the products. (Heather and Jen think this shows they overdid it just a bit).

I wish I could remember what gets wine and grease out

I am this low maintenance person (well, in most ways) that can't be bothered with hairstyles (hence, the Marcia Bradey look for most of my life) and am known for taking the simplest route when it comes to personal and home care.

For clothing care, I can't remember home rememedies to get stains out, like wine and grease, of which I seem to have a preponderance of stains. So I just press my luck and hope that the normal clothes washing gets the stain out, and then if not, I use the clothing for riding / workout gear, or take it to Good Will.

Well, knowing that we had this tip coming up, I bought some EcoCover stain remover, and gave it a really hard test.  I had dropped some greasy food on my favorite pants - then washed and dried them - but ALAS they came out with the grease stain still.  (Great, baked in now due to the dryer.)

So I pretreated them with the EcoCover stuff, and scrubbed for 20 seconds with the plastic bristles that come as the top part of the big stick of the stuff. And VOILA! stains are gone.

I just sent word to our editorial team that I would love if they could add this recommendation to today's tip if not too late... we shall see if they are sober and can get it included.  If not, give Eco Cover a try if you can't rememember good home remedies or can't be bothered, like me.

How does Bi-O-Kleen Oxygen Bleach Plus compare in ingredients and effectiveness to OxiClean?
Every greenie needs Haley's Tips. It a great book full of all natural cleaning and stain removing concoctions.
When I can't get a stain out, I grab something cute from my fabric draw and sew it on over the stain. I may add a few little patches so it looks like they were meant to be there. Great tips on ecover stain product. I have yet to make it work but I'll try your tips.
I've found that Neutrogena soap (either in liquid or bar form) gets out stains pretty well. I think its the glycerin that does the trick. Also, my mother had "ruined" a shirt by washing it with a darker item that transfered blotches of color. I soaked it overnight using hydrogen peroxide as a spot treatment. It was completely gone by morning.
I've heard, but not tried pouring white wine to get red wine out of the carpet. Almost sounds like a waste of wine! I have tried and it does work, pouring salt on red wine (tablecloth or carpet). You have to pour a lot and do it before you wipe/dab it. The trick is also waiting...sometimes it doesn't come all the way out, but Oxy Clean or other product can get it out from there...happy scrubbing.
Definately WHITE WINE gets out RED WINE from clothes etc. Every French person knows this.
Earthsaver: I haven't tried the Bi-O-Kleen stuff, so I don't know about the effectiveness (anyone else?), but both use the same active ingredients, sodium percarbonate and soda ash (a.k.a. sodium carbonate).
I'm so glad to hear someone praising Ecover stain remover. I have used it on all kinds of stains and I haven't been let down yet.
I gotta check out the Ecover stuff. I am always dropping crap on my clothes.
Is there a product ot there as effective as chlorine bleach? I gave it up several years ago and cannot find anything as effective.
Kitchen dish soap will get the grease stains out. Just rub some on the stain, rinse and then launder as usual.
Hi, thanks for the stain removal tips. There is one completely amazing (to me, at least) way to remove fruit stains: just boil some water, dip the soiled part of the garment in the boiling water anywhere from 10 seconds to 2 minutes, and voila! no more stain. I couldn't believe it when I first saw it, but I promise, this works! (Be careful, and have a safe place to transfer the garment to when the stain is out. You might need to wear oven mitts to protect your hands, or use tongs to hold the garment in the water.)
Scenario: dinner party (murder mystery-style) and 8 guests around a candlelit table with a white damask table cloth. Horrified look on 1 guest's face when she spilled her glass full of red wine on the cloth. "Oh, no big deal" I say as I grab the jug of white wine reserved for such a task. Amazement sets on all faces as the red wine stain disappears before their eyes...
Does anyone know anything about OxyClean - is it eco-friendly?
i think i want known the in this topic

I love the blog, keep it up. I find this kind of stuff interesting. Seems like an honest mistake on the sales rep's part, but it is something that shouldn't happen. http://www.plastikcerrahi.net
