BANG FOR THE BITE
apple

If 10,000 Biters gift an organic T-shirt instead of a nonorganic one, we'll avert the weight of 22 hipsters in pesticides.

COCKTAIL FACT

In 2003, the NY Times reported that Pabst Blue Ribbon was the fastest-growing domestic beer brand due to its adoption by the hipster community.

What do you get for the person who is cooler than you could possibly hope to be?

The Bite

That they'll actually like, we mean. Finding gifts for hipsters can be harder than scoring tix to an M.I.A. concert (translation: "near impossible"), but we tracked down a few gifts that should garner more than that trademark blank stare from hipper-than-thou friends.

The Benefits

  • Cool gifts (and not just in a metaironic sense). Help your friends keep their place at the very top of the [enter Lower East Side or other hipster 'hood here] scene.
  • Fewer pesticides. Choose gifts with sustainable materials, like organic cotton (1/3 of the world's pesticides are used for the production of regular cotton).
  • Smaller landfills. Some companies incorporate reused materials, such as recycled leather. People with fixed-gear bikes love that stuff.

Personally Speaking

Toshio has dreams about moving to Echo Park, getting an asymmetrical haircut, and listening to Grizzly Bear B-sides on vinyl for hours on end. Then he wakes up and realizes that he can't afford the right jeans.

Wanna Try?

  • Ashley Watson Thrush Bag - a month's salary from a coffeeshop job will get your giftee this red-hot, red handbag made from recycled leather. For guys: Alchemy Goods manbags here ($300).
  • Stewart + Brown Cashmere Mittens - precious as a character in any Wes Anderson flick; 1% of profits go to charity ($79).
  • Jorg & Olif Wicker Basket - from an eco-conscious company; install on any bike to get around town in hipster style. Download its order form to view ($50).
  • Turk + Taylor Ms. Cold Comfort T-Shirt - seasonally appropriate graphic printed on organic cotton ($46).
  • iTunes - pair an iTunes gift certificate with movie or music suggestions, then leave so they can make fun of your taste ($15 and up).

No Guarantees
A few things are so cool that they're untouchable (Elliott Smith, skin-tight jeans, free food...), but the fact is we can't guarantee that the goods recommended in today's tip will still be derision-proof by the time your hipster giftee tears off the recycled wrapping paper later this month. Whatever happens, our picks were pretty cool on Dec 5th, 2007 - we will totally stand by that.

What about vintage clothes?
I live in Canada and have been using Method since it was not yet available here. Great stuff and the BEST shower cleaner EVER is their daily shower cleaner. Wow!
Just an FYI for those bargain conscious Biters, the Ashley Watson Thrush bag is available for $265 - just slightly less than a month's paycheck at the coffee shop - at a site called Beklina: http://www.beklina.com/ashleywatson.html The site also has a deal now through Daily Candy for further discount, not to mention a sale section. What's cooler than that?
Method stuff is awesome!!! I love all of their stuff, but especially their wood cleaning stuff, and their bathroom wipes. I bought some of the cinnamon hand wash and it smells very lovely. Their soap is also wonderful.:) They also send me tons of freebie stuff. I LOVE Method!!!! :)
The link for the solar helicopter toy is from England. Any places to purchase w/ dollars in the US?
Green gifts are great to give, but they're only for the upwardly-mobile types who can afford to give 'em because many of them are too pricey for us average Janes and Joes. (BTW, Toshio, who the heck is Elliott Smith???)
