How can recycling your printer's ink cartridge help you, the environment and maybe even your favorite charity?

10.03.2005

The Bite:
Placed end-to-end, all the toner cartridges sold yearly in the U.S. would stretch from Washington, D.C. to California-and back again! That's a lot of waste (over 200 million pounds of it), so recycle your old cartridges.
The Benefits:
  • Save money. Buying recycled cartridges can cost up to 75% less than getting new ones.
  • Some schools report earning over $1,000 dollars a year through used cartridge drives.
  • Reduce landfill. The average printer cartridge can take over 450 years to decompose.
Personally Speaking:
Just because we're web-based doesn't mean we don't use ink! Jen's loves buying Carrot Ink's recycled cartridges, while Heather is a fan of Hewlett-Packard's free cartridge reclamation program (see below).
Wanna Try:
  • HP - Have a used HP printer cartridge? Check your cartridge package for a free envelope to send back your used cartridge, or fill out this easy form to get a pre-paid envelope sent to you.
  • Carrot Ink - Buy remanufactured ink cartridges for nearly every style of printer.
  • Cartridge World - Inexpensive and easy cartridge refills.
  • FundingFactory and RecycleFund - Donate your cartridges to help fund schools, AND they pay all shipping expenses.
  • Most Staples stores now have bins where you can dump your cartridges - with the proceeds going to support good causes.

Cocktail Fact

The US Bureau of Engraving and Printing prints 38 million currency notes a day - that's about $541 million.

Bang For The Bite

More than 3.4 liters of oil are needed to make one new laser cartridge. Cartridge recycling could save nearly 50 million liters of oil in the US per year.

Your blog is so nice. Thanks.
It's a fantastic blog. Thanks.
Recycling keeps large amounts of plastics out of our landfills and saves natural resources. Every year over 300 million spent toner and inkjet cartridges are thrown away. This equates to almost 1000 tons of unnecessary pollution that enters our waste stream every day. In addition, more than 3 quarts of oil are used during the manufacturing of a new OEM laser toner cartridge. In contrast, a recycled cartridge only requires 1 quart of oil to be able to be used. This year alone, toner cartridge remanufacturing can save over 11 million gallons of oil. Toner cartridges sold by InkCloners, LLC, are environmentally friendly.
