Want to keep your organic food budget in check? Just buy the best bang for the bite organic foods.

The Bite:

Certain fruits and veggies contain greater amounts of pesticides and chemicals than others, so going organic on these items is your best bet:

1. Wheat 2. Apples 3. Celery 4. Green Beans 5. Peaches 6. Grapes 7. Spinach 8. Pears 9. Strawberries 10. Winter Squash
The Benefits:
  • Buying produce that is organic is a good way to play it safe. The FDA has documented the average levels of pesticides in the foods above and found nearly 30 different kinds of chemicals in each serving.
  • Supporting organic farmers instead of conventional factory farms means greater protection for the environment and defense of sustainable farming practices. Factory farm workers have some of the most dangerous jobs in the country due to chemical exposure.
Personally Speaking:
We would love to buy everything organic, but it's just not possible due to budgets and availability. Since fruits seem to be high on the pesticide list, we are mainly shooting to ensure that all our fruit is always organic, and we're memorizing the list above. (Let's face it - wheat is a tough one - you can't always get organic flour in everything. But we try . . . )
Wanna Try:
  • Go to Local Harvest to find a local farmer with organic produce.
  • The Green Guide gives lots of helpful information and ideas about protecting you and your family from chemical exposure.
  • Tired of factory farming taking over the produce aisles? Become a member of the Organic Trade Association.

Cocktail Fact

Today, there is not a living thing in the world - no matter how remote - that does not have at least 14 agricultural chemicals in its bloodstream.

Bang For The Bite

Organic food can cost significantly more. A trip to the organic produce aisle could cost at least $5 more than buying conventional. We recommend you hit up the farmers' market where you are sure to get a better deal and you support local farmers.
