BANG FOR THE BITE

These methods take a few more minutes to get your grill going, but avoiding lighter fluid's toxic chems (and toxic taste) is well worth the time.

COCKTAIL FACT

In a survey released in 2006, 63% of 18-24-year-old Americans couldn't ID Iraq on a map of the Middle East.

Wanna go where few grillers have gone before?

The Bite

Explore lighter fluid alternatives. As BBQ season heats up, many people are using the nasty stuff to light their coals, but if you haven't already switched to gas, put eco-friendlier (and tastier) ways to light your charcoal on the map.

The Benefits

  • Discovering greener grilling. Lighter fluid's made from not-so-eco, nonrenewable petroleum distillates that let off volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and contribute to unhealthy, ground-level ozone pollution.
  • A key to healthier 'cuing. Those VOCs can cause everything from headaches to cancer.
  • No gnarly lighter-fluid taste.

Personally Speaking

Toshio misses the tri-weekly BBQs he had when he lived in Portland and had a big backyard. The concrete slab behind his SF flat (just big enough for the recycle bin and trash can) doesn't quite measure up.

Grilling the Competition

Two weeks ago I carted a gas mini-grill 40 minutes across San Francisco by bike, all for a softball game. Our team's (we're listed on the roster as "Some Other Team" and Biters Elisa and Mike are teammates) idea was to keep the grill cooking during the whole one-hour match so that we'd look way more well-fed than our opponents, triggering in them hunger and a total loss of confidence.

Even after attempting to bribe the ref with a kielbasa, Some Other Team lost the game, 21-1, so I guess you could say we got roasted on the field - but at least our stomachs were full.

-Toshio...off to play ball...

Biter Comments...
Is keeping "the grill cooking during the whole one-hour match" really in the spirit of Ideal Bite?
I lived in severla 3rd world countries and when I wanted to BBQ I did what the locals did. I simply dipped papertowels in vegitable oil and placed them among the charcoal. Then, I light the paper towles. The vegitable oil acted as lighter fluid and it was clean, inexpensive and you don't need to buy any fancy gadgets
the weber chimney works really well & fast and cost me no more than $20 - totally worth it!
