Alarmed by your bedmate's morning breath?

03.24.2009

The Bite:
Yawn - we've heard that one before. Pretty much everyone suffers dragon breath in the morning, but prevent halitosis the rest of the day with natural methods such as tongue scraping. Up and at 'em.
The Benefits:
  • Simple prevention, am to pm. Up to 90% of bad breath starts in the mouth, so keeping your maw clean (by brushing, flossing, and drinking H2O, for example) goes a long way. For extra protection, you can try stuff like bacteria-blocking zinc and parsley.
  • Pressing snooze on the apocalypse. Recycled plastic tongue cleaners (your tongue's the most likely suspect for halitosis woes, BTW) and organic halitosis prevention options cut down on waste and pesticide use.
Personally Speaking:
Jen's brother co-founded a business to give people the other kind of ideal bite (a dental practice in Atlanta). She tries to get him to clean her teeth for free, but he won't - not until she starts to floss regularly.
Wanna Try:
In addition to brushing and flossing:
  • Drink Water - when you're dehydrated, your mouth produces less saliva; saliva helps clean away bad-breath-causing bacteria.
  • Eat Parsley - either the fresh, organic kind, or Now Foods Parsley Herb Capsules, made in a solar-powered factory; capsules do contain animal-based gelatin ($4/100 capsules).
  • Scrub Your Tongue - either with your toothbrush or a Preserve Tongue Cleaner, a recycled-plastic tongue scrubber ($12/4).
  • Rinse Your Mouth - try Jason Power Smile Mouthwash, which cleans with perilla seed and zinc, and has no alcohol; peppermint flavor ($6/16 ounces).

Cocktail Fact

Minty shooters? Original formula Listerine is 26.9% alcohol, or about 54 proof.

These ideas REALLY work and thank you for spreading the IDEA about recycled plastic tongue CLEANERS!
I would be nice if someone made a non peppermint toothpaste. There are those of us who not only don't like peppermint but also gag on it. Sometimes I find it really hard to brush my teeth because just the smell of peppermint makes me gag, and I would propably brush longer if it had a different taste.
I brush my teeth with baking soda and a bit of hydrogen peroxide 35% food grade and it does a wonderful job along with not really having a taste. Keeps plaque down and whitens too. No peppermint taste. Happy Brushing
Tom's makes other flavors including cinnamon-clove and fennel. You could also try Tom's kids flavors--the strawberry tastes great.
