BANG FOR THE BITE
apple

More than 2 million pounds of used glass is recycled each year from just one of the manufacturers mentioned below – that’s a lot of energy and waste savings!

COCKTAIL FACT

“Vaseline glass” is yellow-green antique glass that actually contains uranium to create the color (yes, it is slightly radioactive).

Feeling bored in your bathroom?

The Bite

Re-tiling a bathroom can breathe new life into a dingy old loo. Purchase bathroom tiles made from recycled glass, and the most "natural" (ahem) room in the house will become even more so.

The Benefits

  • Glass is impervious to moisture, making it a great choice for baths and showers.
  • Saves energy. For every bottle recycled, enough energy is saved to run a 100-watt bulb for 4 hours.
  • Good for all bathroom surfaces. Can be used in all tile applications, including counters, walls and flooring.
  • Environmentally responsible. Save on the huge amount of glass waste in landfills.  Glass makes up 6% of all the items in a landfill and it takes over 1 million years to decompose.

Personally Speaking

Jen’s redoing her bathroom next spring, and loves Terra Green’s Decorative Mosaic Listelli.  Heather wishes she could buy her apartment in Brooklyn, let alone redo the bathroom tiles (if a miracle happens, she will use GreenSage’s 6” tiles).

Wanna Try?

Because they are very labor intensive (hand-cast, hand-cut, and hand-finished), recycled glass tiles rival the cost of high-end conventional tiles, but check these out:
  • GreenSage - 100% recycled content tiles in six sizes, from 1 inch to 6 inches and in six different colors (upwards of $36/ sq ft).
  • LivinGreen - 100% recycled glass tiles in various colors in s sizes ($35- $40/sq ft).
  • Terra Green – at least 55% post consumer recycled glass tiles (as low as $25/sq ft).
  • Oceanside Glass tile - 85% recycled glass in some of their products ($25-$35/sq ft).
