Earth Day's tomorrow, but what about the remaining 364 days of the year?

The Bite

This weekend, people around the world will be coming together in celebration of Earth Day. But Biters know that one beach cleanup per year ain’t gonna hack it. That’s why this Earth Day, we ask that you encourage a friend (or 5) to take a Bite and make it Earth Day every day. In the meantime, join us in celebrating the impact that all you Biters have had in the 10 short months since Ideal Bite started:

The Benefits

  • At least 7,897 Biters purchased their weekly fruit from a local farmers’ market rather than grocery store, having the environmental impact of removing 13 cars from the roadway for an entire year. TIP:Really Buying the Farm - CSAs - June 29, 2005
  • At least 9,978 Biters kept their tires properly inflated during the last 10 months, saving enough gasoline to send a Prius around the entire Earth exactly once. TIP:Under Pressure - June 20, 2005

Personally Speaking

Yep, you read it right: we’re taking Earth Day off. Heather will be sipping organic cocktails at a birthday party, while Jen is going for a long ride on horseback. We’ll get back to our “every day is Earth Day” attitude on Monday.

We’re Taking the Day Off Tomorrow

We wanted to say we were boycotting Earth Day altogether today, but somehow, we were acutely aware that we'd get voted off the enviro island if we went down that path.  Earth Day has been a pivotal part of a movement for decades, and it deserves all of our support.  Besides, anything smacking of a boycott kind of flies in the face of our theory that we are going to really going to change the world by being positive.  You get the idea we are espousing in today's tip: more than just once a year, we can all incorporate green actions into our daily lives.

So, no, don't boycott Earth Day tomorrow.  Of course, go do a clean up of a beach or a park.  Cut down any unnecessary consumption.  Plant a tree or twenty.  But do me an additional favor, would you?  Go buy a green version of a product or a service that you have NEVER bought a green version of in the past.  As part of your Earth Day efforts, support the companies that are doing well by doing good. (For ideas of recommended products to buy, check out all our past tips at: http://idealbite.com/tiplibrary/tipheaders.php).

Go on, accuse me of being a crass commercialist.  But you saw those impact statements in today's tip.  I stand by my request: if we all changed out one product per week from a conventional version to a green one, imagine the message that would send to these businesses - imagine the additional time, effort and energy they would devote to the greening of the business (and broader) world.

-Heather... off to prep for an Earth Day of friends, jazz and (most likely) inorganic cocktails...

Biter Comments...
Take that day off- you certianly deserve it. I agree that actions- even small ones- taken daily have a much bigger impact than a once a year activity. I actually remember when Earth Day was just getting started ( yes I am that old) Students from my middle school ( called Jr. High then)in Billings, Montana formed Students for a Clean Environment and hauled an amazing amount of trash out of a stream bed and then held "teach ins" ( ha ha what a quaint term) about water pollution issues and how bikes help the environment. One of the issues we talked about was excessive packaging of products - which obviously is still a huge problem. I do think once a year events can be good publicity and awarness raising but action taken daily is, of course, much more effective. Just a little trip down that green memory lane. Kim in Libby Montana This year I will "celebrate" Earth Day by driving 4 teens and a 6 year old around in my ( not fuel efficient) SUV ( I know, I know but it the only vehicle large enough to hold them all) but we will drive at a moderate pace and have organic snacks!
You made an impression! I purchased organic fertilizer for our lawn after throwing out a bag of the chemically-robust verstion. It was more expensive but I feel better about not adding more chemicals (than I already do) to our earth. And and I don't have to worry if our dogs nibble the green grass. And I was able to buy it at a regular Nursery...so they must be getting the the hint that people want these alternatives. Now to dump that 4 kilo bag of "blue" plant vitamins that I bought at Home Depot...hard to break old habits.
i have two topics to discuss. first, there is the hang your clothes on a line which to me leaves one question. has there been any other way to dry clothes? i have been hanging my clothes for over 24 years. inside on lines in my basement in the colder months and outside on lines in the warmer ones. this was even though i was given a dryer by my girlfriend over 20 years ago(to which i still have to use to get the wrinkles out of only the clothes i wear for work then i hang to dry). i even washed my daughter's diapers and hung them to dry every night when she was a baby. and i still only wash in cold water to save energy because hot water doesn't make clothes any more cleaner than cold, i simply add white vinager to the rinse water to help eliminate the odors and kill the bacteria. second, the topic of the junk mail to which i have found the perfect solution for me. I have a lot of pets so i shred the junk mail and any other pieces of paper that i don't need to make bedding for my animals. it recycles the paper and reduces the chances of someone wanting to take my garbage for identity theft proposes. and when i need to change my animals, i use the feed bags to empty the waste from their cages into. this again recycles a paper product instead of just throwing it out with the trash. i use very few plastic garbage bags this way in a small attempt to at least allow paper to decay back into the earth.
If anyone deserves Earth Day off it is you!!!!! Unfortunately I can't claim to be one of the derserving ones! I have enjoyed Ideal Bite every single day since I discovered it and I'm trying to be "greener" every day. I was really happy to see you in Vanity Fair - it's only a drop in the bucket compared to the credit you really deserve, but it is definitely a start!! I would love to be as brilliant and creative as you two are!
I *love* your new header - stylish. Fits better with your overall brand vs. the martini glass. You ladies are a stylish twosome! May I ask who your illustrator is? Amazing. Holly
Hi Holly, our the illustrator's name is Aurore Hutton. Yes, related to Timothy... his beautiful wife. I will pass on the compliment! Jen
