Feel like you can never use your miles or decide which credit card to use each day?

The Bite

Pick a credit card that supports your favorite charity and make the choice an easy one.  There are several cards out there that give bonuses to your favorite charities based on how much you charge.

The Benefits

  • Select from a number of worthy causes such as: peace, human rights, economic justice, animal protection, and the environment.
  • Continue shopping as usual and you’ll be making contributions to the charity of your choice effortlessly. In most cases, there’s no additional cost for participating.
  • Enjoy your everyday purchases even more. Feel good knowing that the next time you fill your shopping cart, you’ll also be making a contribution towards helping the needy, our planet included.

Personally Speaking

We both have Working Assets credit cards (see below), which saw waaaayyyy too much “charitable giving” over the holidays.  Oops.

Wanna Try?

  • Working Assets Credit Card– For every transaction you make, $0.10 is donated to charities working for peace, human rights, economic justice, education, and the environment.
  • Defender’s of Wildlife Credit Card– MBNA contributes $.02 to Defender’s of Wildlife for every $10 charged. It may not sound like much, but so far MBNA has already donated more than $3.8 million.
  • MileDonor – Got miles to burn?  Let this nonprofit help you donate them for “personal and charitable use worldwide.”
  • Red American Express - the brainchild of Bono; proceeds go to the global fight against AIDS.
  • CornCard USA - is your company or organization issuing credit cards? Encourage them to try this corn-based option.

A Dog-Eat-Rooster Ramble

OK, I really can't stomach writing about credit cards in today's blog, because trust me - I have a heady relationship with my credit cards already and think about them too much. Instead, let's celebrate the dawn of a new year...

Yep. Yesterday was the start of the Lunar New Year. The Year of the Dog, as the Chinese would have it.

Not being a huge fan of dogs (well, except for Cricket and Harlow, of course), I'd be inclined to think that the Year of the Dog would be a sort of boring year - slobbery and whining.

But I gotta say, I am looking forward to it (because while the Year of the Rooster was truly transforming and amazing for me, it was also a bit of a thrilling and bloody cockfight, and I'm looking forward to some snuggled-up warm fuzzies instead).

Some things that the Year of the Dog should hold in store for us:
  • Loyalty
  • Unconditionality
  • Goodness
  • Playfulness
And of course, we can't forget to pay homage to Sharp Teeth - no year is complete or even correct without the occasional reminder that it might just jump up and bite your throat out. And while that is scary, it also keeps us real. And a little on our toes. And a little more alive.

Happy Dog Year, all.

-Heather... off to prep for hate mail from dog lovers... oh, so sue me. I like cats.

Biter Comments...
Wise words for a good life! Look to this day, for it is life of life. In its brief course lay all the realities and verities of existance, the bliss of growth, the splendor of action - the glory of power. For yesterday is but a dream, and tomorrow is only a vision, but today well lived, makes every yesterday a dream of happiness and every tomorrow a vision of hope. Sanskrit proverb
One problem with the "green" credit cards. Most are administered by MBNA, one of the largest contributers to the Republican party, who aren't exactly the earth-friendliest bunch these days. If you really want to help the planet, avoid doing business with MBNA and make your donations to environmental causes separate from your credit-card spending. Sign up for Working Assets Long Distance instead of a Working Assets credit card to help ease the process of making donations that will make a difference.
I agree with Anne. I use the Working assets phone instead of the credit card. Instead of credit cards we use a Paypal card that reads as a credit card so we can use it for reservations, trips, what have you and a debit card. It was very very hard to give up the cards, but not only are they trecherous for your finances, but most of them invest/support in groups we don't like, plus theres all that identity theft going on. Thanks for reminding us about year of the Dog! I agree totally that the year of the Rooster was rather grim, and I am also looking forward to some warm fuzzies. Unfortuantly, my two warm fuzzy dogs had a close encounter with a skunk so I'll hold off with the cuddeling.
All major credit card companies donate to the Republican party, probably for reasons unrelated to the environment (see for yourself at http://www.opensecrets.org/pacs/index.asp). For many people, credit cards are a necessary evil. ;-) No matter which credit card company you choose, you know that a majority of its political contributions will go to a political party you may or may not support. They are all the same in that regard. Therefore, it's nice that some companies offer "green" credit cards. If you need a credit card & know that they are all donating to the Republican party anyways, then why not go with the company who donates to social & environmental organizations as well? It's a step in the right direction. If every card owner carried a "green" credit card, think about the message that would send to credit card companies! At the end of the day, customer satisfaction is more important to their survival than political satisfaction.
Just to mention, Target Visa donates to the school of your choice and then you get 10% off Target purchases. Better yet Target now carries Seventh Generation and Method.
