Does your whiteboard make the grade?

03.17.2009

The Bite:
100%, if you've got whiteboards and markers that graduated from the school of eco-friendliness. A++.
The Benefits:
  • #1 cash savings. One pack of six refillable markers with refills included = 246 disposable ones.
  • Nontox classrooms. Xylene, a chemical found in typical disposable markers, increases indoor air pollution in classrooms and your office.
  • Learning about better boards. We found a whiteboard option that's as eco as can be - it's Cradle-to-Cradle certified.
  • Fewer teacher's pests. A teacher has to throw away 1-2 dry erase markers each week. Not with refillable ones.
Personally Speaking:
Although our doctors would beg to differ, some of us sorta miss the smell of conventional whiteboard markers.
Wanna Try:
  • AusPens - last 40 times longer than disposables and come nontoxic, xylene-free ($70/6 markers, with refills).
  • Quartet Envi Whiteboard/Bulletin Board - Cradle-to-Cradle certified whiteboard and bulletin board combo that's designed to be recycled, unlike most ($42).
  • Planet Safe Planners - not whiteboards per se, but you can use erasable markers on these biodegradable wall calendars ($13-$19). Biter exclusive: get 15% off when you enter the code ideal-bite during checkout.

Cocktail Fact

The solvent in dry erase markers dissolves many permanent marker inks, so if you have permanent marker on your whiteboard, you can usually take a dry erase marker, write over the "permanent" stuff, and wipe it clean.

Bang For The Bite

If 10,000 Biters each purchase six refillable whiteboard markers instead of disposable markers, we'll save the weight of 1,250 school teachers from going into landfills.

Tips Like This

This was one of the best tips I've seen because it reduces trash and unnecessary waste tremendously for offices which are known to create enormous amounts of trash daily. Then the additional tip of using a dry-erase marker to clean 'permanent' marker off a whiteboard was the crowning touch. Just think for a moment about how many whiteboards have been trashed and made useless by accidently being written upon by someone using a 'permanent' marker. Thank you for one of the greatest tips ever!
I tried to order pens from the link provided, but it says they only ship to Canada???
Those are great markers but the price is outrageous.
- The budget savings is very attractive, as each pen costs close to 28 cents per pen.
